Lydia or Lucy?

Hi all, currently expecting a baby girl and we’re stuck between Lydia or Lucy. My name is Louise so I wanted to have an L name for my little girl, husband prefers Lucy but I like Lydia!

All opinions welcome 😊

I like both Lucy and Lydia but I love Lacey.

Ohyousillydivvy · 29/07/2023 02:18

Lacey is very dated and is of a certain type of name similar to Tiffany and Bianca. Will age horribly and has a tacky Eastenders vibe to it.

Changethetoner · 29/07/2023 02:49

I love the name Elizabeth.

Lara, Lyra, Lisa, Elsie, Lottie (Charlotte).

ChocolateBubbleBarsmakemefat · 29/07/2023 04:09

Lydia hands down, what a beautiful name.

Seamist22 · 29/07/2023 09:36

My name is Louise and my daughter is called Lucy, so I vote for Lucy 😁

Lifeisapeach · 29/07/2023 09:38

Sorry OP I don’t like either.

Lucy… too common

Lydia… chlamydia…. Or (the age old knock knock joke of) lid of a teapot… if you’re in Scotland you’ll get it.

Lucia is a lovely alternative.

Sequinsandfrills · 29/07/2023 09:42

Lucy would edge it for me. I think it's prettier than Lydia - just not keen on the "Lid" sound and the nn would likely be Lids.

SemperIdem · 29/07/2023 09:54

I really like Lydia.

However the adult one I know gets called Lid and Lids, which is off putting!

StillWantingADog · 29/07/2023 09:58

Both are nice but Lydia is a teeny bit old fashioned IMO whereas Lucy is timeless.

I always connect Lydia with P&P but it’s difficult to totally avoid connotations.
Eg.
my dd was going to be Elsa-this was literally a month before Frozen came out. Can you imagine! Fortunately dd turned out to be ds.

I also like Lila

I once knew someone who said that she would not like her children to have the same initial as either her or her husband because, when mail came through (I know it doesn’t happen as much now with email), if no title was put, just the initial & surname, there would be confusion as to who should open it.
Having said that, my sister-in-law & her 7 siblings have the same initial, & she has given my niece & nephew the same initial as her.

Gherkingreen · 29/07/2023 10:36

Lydia is beautiful. I know two, one is an older woman (in her 70s) and the other a young girl - it suits them both beautifully. I have boys but if I'd had a girl, it would've been top of my list.

SavvyMaria · 29/07/2023 10:37

I prefer Lydia. Lucy is nice but a bit dull.

SunnieShine · 29/07/2023 10:41

Both are beautiful names but I prefer Lydia.

And I think choosing a name with the same initial as yours is a lovely idea. I bet your daughter will agree too.

flutterby1 · 29/07/2023 10:42

Lydia

doorstopper123 · 29/07/2023 11:02

Go with Libby if you love it

Sennelier1 · 29/07/2023 13:15

I would go for something in between : Lilia! I have an aunt with that name ❤️

kerrycgeorgie · 29/07/2023 13:25

Go with what you love - you can put any two names up for debate and you'll get pros and cons, so it really does come down to your preference, and that might change once baby arrives.
I have a Libby, which I've always loved (think 90s neighbours) and the nn of our family female name that gets passed along normally as middle name. Loads of people told me they didn't like it but when she arrived everyone said what a gorgeous name!
Love Lydia and Lara, Lucy is a great name that ages well.

Daphnis156 · 29/07/2023 15:17

I know both a Lydia and a Lucy, who are both auditors and extremely petty and annoying.

Milkyway42 · 29/07/2023 15:49

Thanks everyone for the responses. I’m loving Lara which someone has suggested 😀I think Lydia is probably out now as husband has decided he disliked 3 syllable names

I prefer Lucy.

For some reason Lydia sounds like a bitchy girl name to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

ThickSkinnedSoWhat · 29/07/2023 19:24

How about meeting in the middle and going for Lucia?

useitorlose · 29/07/2023 19:38

I have a Lydia, inspired by Lydia Bennett but mine is far more sensible! She's early 20s.

SavvyMaria · 29/07/2023 20:01

Lara is lovely.

Elizadoloads · 29/07/2023 20:13

Lydia is a lovely name.

DidYouDoIt · 29/07/2023 21:21

I think all three names are nice choices, and each has their unique charm.

Lydia = mature and somewhat elegant while Lucy has a youthful energy to it.

The Lucy Letby trial may be something to keep in mind for naming a baby this year in UK as a PP has mentioned.

I also tend to prefer names with 2 syllables, so if it were me, I'd probably lean towards Lara. But of course, it's totally up to you!
