Lydia or Lucy?

Hi all, currently expecting a baby girl and we’re stuck between Lydia or Lucy. My name is Louise so I wanted to have an L name for my little girl, husband prefers Lucy but I like Lydia!

All opinions welcome 😊

Lydia is gorgeous OP... but I have to ask...why do you want to have an 'L' name just because yours begins with 'L'? There are so many lovely names that are off limits to you if you stick to this rather unimaginative stance 🤷‍♀️

I think I just like the idea of us having similar names, I realise that sounds a bit wet written down! We’ve thought of other names but have really struggled with girls names.
I’ve thought about Elizabeth with nn Libby which I love

Thanks all for the responses 😊 I still love Lydia but husband has just said he’s gone right off it. Ugh!

Lydia

Lydia was my favourite girls name ever, I love it. But my SIL used it while I was pregnant so my daughter is called something else. So on that basis you must use it for me!

I also like Laura, I think it's really underused these days but is a a lovely name.

Ohmylovejune · 27/07/2023 16:59

Lucia said Loo-chia. Love it

aintnospringchicken · 27/07/2023 17:05

Lucy.

BatheInTheLight · 27/07/2023 17:10

I like Lucy. We were going to pick that IF we'd had a DD.

Lydia could easily be bullied when she's older and called Chlamydia 😆

Pallisers · 27/07/2023 17:11

I love Lydia. Would have used it if I had another girl.

NooNaNa · 27/07/2023 17:15

Lydia is beautiful.

Lucy is sweet, but how about Lucinda?

SpringIntoChaos · 27/07/2023 17:26

@Milkyway42 love the idea of Elizabeth with Libby used as a nickname. There are so many more options later on with that too 💕

Lydia

Lydia

brokenlore · 27/07/2023 17:35

Lydia.

Lucy sounds to close to loo seat! (Even more so since nobody seems to use the 't' at the end of words anymore...grumble grumble!

brokenlore · 27/07/2023 17:37

Has anyone mentioned Lucinda? A compromise between the two names and no toilet connotations...just a wry pretty name?

brokenlore · 27/07/2023 17:37

Wry should be very, no idea why autocorrect did that.

Onesnowynight · 27/07/2023 18:18

Personally I’m not keen on either. I don’t like the Luoose and Lyd shortened version.

midsomermurderess · 27/07/2023 19:35

I prefer Lucy, it feels sunnier,, more bouncy, that Lydia.

FedUpMumof10YO · 27/07/2023 19:40

Lucy

StellaOlivetti · 27/07/2023 19:44

Absolutely love Lydia. Lucy is nice, but not in the same league, in my opinion! Also love Elizabeth, and Libby is a nice shortening.

gjg · 27/07/2023 19:55

As a nurse Lydia always makes me think of Guys and St Thomas sexual health clinic and by association Chlamydia. But if you don't live in London it's not an issue!

Coffeeandcakemum · 27/07/2023 20:35

I prefer Lydia 😊

Whataretheodds · 27/07/2023 20:37

Elizabeth NN Libby!

No confusion with post between L and L

ASoapImpressionOfHisWifeWhichHeAte · 27/07/2023 20:59

I like Lydia as a name on its own, but all the Lydias I've ever known have been knobs. Up to and including Lydia in 'Pride and Prejudice'. No exaggeration, I can think of five just off of the top of my head that I've known from work and school and all were/are just complete bellends. Maybe I've just been unlucky with the Lydias that I've known, but it does seem to be a theme.

Lucy is a bit little-girly for a grown woman I think- and there's the unfortunate 'Lucy Locket' thing- but it's not an unpleasant name and is due a comeback. And I've only ever known generally nice Lucys!

Londonlady1423 · 27/07/2023 21:03

I'm bias as I have a Lucy and I'm called Louise, I didn't even think about the similarity at first just always liked the name Lucy for its meaning as well as it being one of my favourite book characters. It's a beautiful sweet timeless name. I also really like that we have similar names now too.

Lydia is nice too but reminds me of TOWIE (prob just me!) Hadn't made the Chlamydia connection till I read this post.

What I would say is don't go with a name that either one of you don't like. If you can't decide between the two maybe go back and look at other names? Libby is sweet, there's also Lara, Lacy, Leona, Lenora, Lexi etc

eatdrinkandbemerry · 27/07/2023 21:09

Lol I've got an L name four letters long and so has my daughter 😳
Never even clicked on until I've read this thread and she's been on this planet 9 years 🤣😂🤣
To answer your question I prefer Lydia
