Stuck on names. So far we have
Thisbe
Tabitha
Thea
Elowen
Xanthe
Callista

Suggestions welcome. We quite like Greek/mythology/mystic/romantic (I can’t think of the right term )

Calandra? It means lark.

user1492757084 · 25/07/2023 07:51

They are all okay.
I like Elowen and Xanthe best.
The others have a familiarity between them.
Would you also like? ..
Blithe
Cally
Callidora
Tiffany
Morwenna

motherofawhirlwind · 25/07/2023 07:56

There's a glut of Tabitha's around here, but all aged about 15-17. One of them is mine :)

NN's include Tabs/Abs, Abi, Tia, T, Tiggy.... I don't know of any of them being called Tabby, but I wouldn't have minded anyway - I liked the witchy / cat connection.

DontEatCrisps · 25/07/2023 08:01

Thisbe- I’m afraid Shakespeare has made this unusable for me.
Tabitha- love it.
Thea- meh.
Elowen- like it.
Xanthe- love it although I know a few so may be getting more popular.
Callista- like it.

MrsSamR · 25/07/2023 08:04

What about Persephone shortened to Perse (pronounced Percy) it was on our list for a girl. Or Pandora?

RoseMartha · 25/07/2023 08:14

Tabitha

How about Eleri?

I love Thisbe, but mostly as middle name
Also love Tabitha, Thea and Callista.

PostOpOp · 25/07/2023 08:46

Love Tabitha (couldn't use it because of French side of the family's problems with "th" pronunciation).

Callisto is ok.

But there's a lot of great other suggestions on this thread.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 25/07/2023 10:11

Tabitha and Thea are both really nice.

IHadTheLasagne · 25/07/2023 10:13

Thisbe is a nice fruity wine here, wouldnt use it myself.

Jackonary · 25/07/2023 11:28

Love Tabitha and Elowen. Also like Thea but prefer Dorothea. Also like the suggestions of Hebe, Ariadne and Ianthe.

Mumsnet is so weird. If someone asks about names like Evie, Lily, Ava etc, posters call the names boring and suggest names like you’ve asked about, OP. But if someone asks about names like these, posters say they’re ‘try hard’ and imply that boring names are better. Basically some posters like to criticise all options!

I love your names! Tabitha and Elowen are especially beautiful but Xanthe is lovely too. How about Evanthe, Ianthe, Ariadne? I have a little Tabitha and her name has sooo many cute nicknames - Tiggy, Tibby, Tabby, Bea, Kitty, Tiggs… I just love it! I laugh when people say it’s a cats name as if that’s a negative thing, I think it just makes the name even cooler! (I love Felix too which people also say is a cats name, so I guess I love cats names!)

There's a difference between 'unusual and nice' and 'prime target for mockery'. Thisbe is a perfect example of why some names are rare for a reason 😂

TheBirdintheCave · 25/07/2023 19:10

Oh I really like Thisbe! Also like Elowen but make sure you can pronounce it correctly if you're going to use it :)

I know a Tabitha, she is Tiggy for short which I LOVE

I like Tiggy but don’t know how it can be short for Tabitha. Surely it should be Tibby or Tabby although I don’t like either.

Why can it NOT? Kit is short for Christopher, kitty for Catherine, who are you to say Tiggy isn’t short for Tabitha? It’s obviously not that rare, there are a few on this thread 🙄

If you like Greek mythology, how about Persephone, Helen, Selene, Cassandra or Iris?

I don’t think those names are anywhere near ‘mystical’ enough…. 😉

mangokiwi · 26/07/2023 08:06

Love Tabitha, I know one who is Tabby or Tabs for short.
Elowen is also pretty.
Calista is ok.
Not keen on Thisbe, Thea or Xanthe

I also like Thalia (pronounced Tar-li-a), Lyra, Ophelia, Artemis and Evangeline which I think are all Greek names.

Wow! What an aggressive response. All that could have been said without the nastiness especially as I accept your point.

There is no nastiness in my response - it’s entirely unreasonable for you to judge someone’s nickname based on the fact that you don’t understand how a mother got from A-B. Nicknames quite often don’t follow on from full names with perfect logic?

LilyLemonade · 26/07/2023 19:18

Tabitha is lovely.

with the -th- sound I like Martha, Meredith, Anthea

A few others

Antigone
Iona
Io
Priscilla
Naia
Lorelei
Oriana
Nefeli
Eudora
Diana

25sheets · 26/07/2023 19:20

KirstenBlest · 27/07/2023 08:02
