Thoughts on Mordecai?

I love the name and it doesn't sound odd to me (Jewish heritage) but I think it is very marmite. Mind you, my family names include Pinchas, Bruno, Hedwig and Candida so my vote might not be worth much.

greenspaces4peace · 05/06/2023 22:50

very Hebrew.

BlameItOnTheGoose · 05/06/2023 22:50

Mordecai Richler - great author. I've always loved the name because of him

Pretentious or weird.

Pretentious and weird

WantToBeHappyAndHealthy · 05/06/2023 22:58

"So...
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
you're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!"

This is the first thing that springs to my mind 😁

Flidina · 05/06/2023 22:59

Not keen on it , to be honest, definitely a Harry Potter feel to it, really like Malachi though.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 05/06/2023 22:59

There was a film with that name as the lead character. May have been Depp I'm not sure.

Jewnicorn · 05/06/2023 23:00

If you’re Jewish - great. Really common and lovely Jewish name, I know many of them.

if you’re not, it’s a heavy name for a non Jewish child to wear. You only need to look at some of these comments to see that.

Netaporter · 05/06/2023 23:02

Johnny Depp is my first thought too.

MerelySnark · 05/06/2023 23:02

I used to work with a Malachi. He’s always known as Mal.

Woukd you expect his friends and family to use all three syllables of Mordechi all the time? If not, how would you shorten it?

gogohmm · 05/06/2023 23:04

Was thinking of Malachi for a cat now thinking of Mordechi, still don't want a cat but they are working on me, down to "you can choose the name"

annawc · 05/06/2023 23:54

It's a bit melancholy. Maybe you'll like these names?

Silas
Malachi
Casimir
Cyrus

user1492757084 · 06/06/2023 09:39

I prefer Malachy or Malachi or Malcolm.

CherryRipe1 · 06/06/2023 10:03

I think it's great but then my forbears were from Jewish and fundamental christian communities so names like Mordecai, Isiah, Jeremiah, Josiah, Behr etc are normal to me.

Fuckingfuckssake · 06/06/2023 10:16

There is a very popular cartoon called Regular Show with a lead character called Mordacai, as referenced above.

Wisterical · 06/06/2023 10:20

Mordecai is a favourite name of mine, I think it's lovely to say. I regret that I ended up giving my children nice but plain names because all my favourites (such as Mordecai) were vetoed by their dad.

Peacepudding · 06/06/2023 10:28

There's a tiktoker called the Don who talks surreal rubbish at people in the lifts at Covent Garden, and he has a character named Mordecai. I assume he chose it as being the most ridiculous, silly sounding name he could think of.

Crabwoman · 06/06/2023 10:36

I know a few and would assume you are part of the Jewish Community.

UnexpectedDaisy · 06/06/2023 10:42

I know someone who has this as a last name.. girl or boy?

wingingit1987 · 06/06/2023 10:45

There is a wee boy called Mordecai in my daughters nursery. It’s unusual where I live so it would be a very unique name here.

Tinysoxx · 06/06/2023 10:46

‘More decay’ is how I pronounce it? It this right?

legrandcolbert · 06/06/2023 11:11

You really think it's pronounced that way?

Sigh.

Maw duh kai

Tinysoxx · 06/06/2023 11:12

Apologies was rushing and that last message sounds a bit brutal - I was sounding it out and that’s how it sounded. I think you have got to be very cautious about future teasing OP

afrikat · 06/06/2023 11:13

Children of the Corn

Just no

BloodyHellKen · 06/06/2023 11:26

I know a man called Mordecai, know as Muki. He is Jewish though, born in Israel. I think it sounds quite old fashioned to be honest (the man I know is about 60).
