Thoughts on Mordecai?

Ah yes! I wondered why I wasn’t in love with it and couldn’t quite articulate. I think it’s the Mord. I just don’t like the sound which is probably why I also don’t like the name Maud. Cai/Kai are nicer shortenings/nicknames of it though… I think it has a ring of Ezekiel to it, which someone was contemplating using on here recently I think. I can imagine the two names on siblings perhaps.

But if you’re Jewish, I believe it’s far more common? I know someone with it as a surname though but have never come across it as a first name personally - but then I don’t know many people with Jewish heritage.

If you love it OP, go for it! No doubt lots don’t like the names I love…

Alot of Jewish/Torah/Old testament names have been assimilated into the mainstream and used by certain Christian sects for years. Noah, Jacob, Adam, Asher, Caleb, Elijah, Isaac, Levi, Nathan, Samuel, Moses James, Joseph, Joshua, John, Uri, Ariel, Balthazar etc etc. I suspect some of these were considered 'odd' once upon a time but have gradually just become 'the norm'.

My first thought is that incredibly annoying cartoon series my DC used to watch "Mordecai and Rigby" I was not a fan. I agree it's a bit close to mord/morte ie death for me.

I do love Malachi though! It was on my list but sadly vetoed by DH.

I'm RC and it doesn't sound weird or odd to me. It's possibly an unusual choice, but not unheard of. I know it's used more in Jewish communities, but I've also heard it used in the western US in families you could classify as surfer-outdoorsy.

Reminds me of Mordor (LOTR), I'm afraid. Never heard it before, so no idea it was Jewish. I like Reuben as a biblical name.

Never heard of it before! Looks like more common in Jewish circles based on comments here. If you're not jewish living in a jewish community don't do it. I see Mordecai and think its some form of old demonic character name. Also think of mordor, morticia, mordred, morbid etc.

If you like the sound why not Maud/Morris/Morgan?

It's a name from the Old Testament, so it's part of Judeo-Christian heritage, along with Anna, Zachary, Aaron, Jacob, Seth, Nathaniel, Daniel, Caleb, and scores of other names from the OT...

Lovely name, not sure I'm so keen on Mord as a shortened version if you don't use the full name though. I like Malachi too.
You certainly don't need to be Jewish or religious to use a biblical name or a name associated with somewhere you're not from. My son has a Scandinavian name and we're not Scandinavian and not one person has said it's odd because we're not!

Same as other posters, it's a very Jewish name or OT Christian.

Nice name, I'd assume the bearer was Jewish, as I've only heard it in that context.

What about Malachai?
