Nina - how many do you know

How many Ninas do you know, how old are they and is their name shortened from a longer name?

I think the name uncommon, my husband thinks they are everywhere, I think it’s timeless, he thinks it’s recently resurged, I think it’s fine on its own, he thinks it’s always a diminutive of something longer.

Oh I did know one. She was a toddler back in 2000 when I used to take my eldest to playgroup, so will be early 20's now.
Her full name was Christina, but she went by Nina.

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/04/2023 10:31

One who is about 40 - short for Janina, and a couple of babies.

I think it’s fine but insubstantial so better as short for something. Traditionally it was a pet form of Anna or female diminutive names in E Europe.

It does seem to be having a resurgence.

JesusSendFloods · 29/04/2023 10:34

It's a beautiful uncommon name, I know two, one was in her eighties and one is 24. My mum and my eldest DD. DD was the only Nina in her school and then in at the uni. It can be shortened to Nin, Nini or expanded to Ninotchka(Russian affectionate diminutive). St Nina was a Georgian Queen who brought Christianity to her country.

Muffit · 29/04/2023 10:40

I know 2 Ninas. They are both great women, one is 54, and one is 25.

shortanddumpy · 29/04/2023 10:43

One. In her 30s

eatdrinkandbemerry · 29/04/2023 10:50

Two
One is 70 + and one is in her late forties.
Lovely name x

Skybluepinky · 29/04/2023 10:57

I know 5, 1 is a rabbit, 2 are little yappy dogs, 1 is a 75 year old and the other is in their 80’s.

Bbq1 · 29/04/2023 10:58
  1. One is about 40, the other is 12.
Curtainpoles · 29/04/2023 10:58

I know one, I don't think it is short for anything.
I think it's a fabulous strong name personally, really like it.

Berlinlover · 29/04/2023 11:06

I know one - she’s 49.

lemonyellows · 29/04/2023 11:07

I knew one when we were kids, but no one else since

LivingNextDoorToNorma · 29/04/2023 11:08

I can only think of one. She’s 3, and it’s her full name.

maranella · 29/04/2023 11:10

Two - one is 15 and the other is 12.

Both are called Nina (not shortened from anything).

SummerSazz · 29/04/2023 11:12

I love it

DH didn't want it as it was the name of one of Christopher Columbus's ships Confused

We had a very long debate over baby names as you might imagine 😄

IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 29/04/2023 11:16

I know two. Both that's there full name. One is 39 and the other is 40. Great name that I would have used if I hadn't been close to one of the Nina's mentioned.

littleburn · 29/04/2023 11:20

One when I was at school. She'd be 48 now!

Squamata · 29/04/2023 11:24

I know one, a six year old. I like the name but the child is quite petite and mousy - I always find it sort of accentuates that somehow.

kitsuneghost · 29/04/2023 11:29

Makes me think of Coronation Street

TiredOfCleaning · 29/04/2023 11:30

Three - One aged late 50s. One aged 21 and one aged 13.
I like the name very much

Paddypartypower · 29/04/2023 11:33

@Squamata

Funny, I know two and they’ve always been quite fat and ginger. I know that sounds horrid but it’s true and I think the name accentuates that too 🤦‍♀️. Is there some sort of Irish connection? As bizarre how both the ones I know have red hair.

Epicstorm · 29/04/2023 11:33

Don’t know any and I’ve never taught one.

Jewelanemone · 29/04/2023 11:34

I work with one, she's 50, not British and she's absolutely lovely!

LauderSyme · 29/04/2023 11:34

I've only ever met one Nina, am guessing she would be in her late thirties now. Nina wasn't a diminutive in her case.

Thelazygardener · 29/04/2023 11:36

Just one, and her name is actually Karina shortened to Nina, she’s 30.

I think it’s a lovely name and I don’t think it’s very common at all.

CC4712 · 29/04/2023 11:36

I know 1 in her early 40's. Not shortened from another name- just Nina. I like it.
