Nina - how many do you know

How many Ninas do you know, how old are they and is their name shortened from a longer name?

I think the name uncommon, my husband thinks they are everywhere, I think it’s timeless, he thinks it’s recently resurged, I think it’s fine on its own, he thinks it’s always a diminutive of something longer.

One who is mid 40s, one who is 8 and both their full names.

One late 30s, one early 30s both shortened from Annina.

Only ever met one, a stereotypically gorgeous blonde Swede, so it always sounds very glamorous to me.

I think Nina is one of the most steady names out there. If you look at darker greener, Nina was 247 in 1996 and 137 in 2021 a leap, but not a huge one. Compare that with other lovely names like Margot (1914 in 1996, 54 in 2021) and Ava (753 in 1996, 4 in 2021) and it is hugely steady. I think it was also pretty popular with the Victorians the Queen Mother's Mother was Cecilia Nina (and might have even been called Nina? Not sure.)

I know a few little ones but none British -- 1 French, 1 Italian, 1 Israeli. I also knew a Nina of Indian background at school. Lovely name!

Sorry for the cross out lines. I forget that dashes on mumsnet cross things out!

I work with a Nina. She is 45. Her nickname is Nina Ballerina as she so beautiful and graceful.

Beachywave · 01/05/2023 11:51

One, 32 and not shortened

dwightschrutebeets · 01/05/2023 11:57

A 40 year old and a 5 year old

DesertSnow · 01/05/2023 12:00

I know a 14 year old Nina, shortened from Carolina (Brazilian). I think it's a great name - uncommon but not too out there.

Oblomov23 · 01/05/2023 12:37

One, from school, 40 years ago, and am still friends with.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 01/05/2023 22:09

I know 2. One is my 80 year old mother-in-law. The other is the 5 year old daughter of a colleague. I don’t think it’s that common a name.

caringcarer · 01/05/2023 22:14

I know 2. 1 is 61 and the other is 36.

I love it

DH didn't want it as it was the name of one of Christopher Columbus's ships Confused

We had a very long debate over baby names as you might imagine 😄

I remember this from History in primary school. I believe they were the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Marina.

Notellinganyone · 01/05/2023 22:19

Lovely name, makes me think of Chekhov!

idiotmagnet · 01/05/2023 22:38
