We already have a Matilda. What's people's thoughts on Zelda for a little sister?

I like it! I mostly prefer traditional names but I have considered Zelda myself. The games are great and of course Aunt Zelda - no negative associations there in my book. I love writing the letter Z and it’s cool to have initials that include lesser used letters of the alphabet!

Tallie27 · 24/02/2023 16:44

I prefer the Zadie suggestion up thread!

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/02/2023 16:50

I quite like it but it may be a harder name to pull off / not suit every girl

I was thinking earlier of the similar sounding name Hilda which I quite like too

Justforlaffs · 24/02/2023 16:53

This is what I think of when I hear the name Zelda.

Its a very “ witchy” sounding name IMO!

I know a lovely Zelda (in her 50s) so have a positive association with the name. However, kids (and many parents) today will definitely associate it with the game character so it depends if that bothers you. I think it’s pretty similar sounding to Matilda and wouldn’t choose it based on that.

Used to terrify me when I was a kid

Yep !

Sounds like she’s a witch from a tv series

Exactly this, I'm pretty sure it was a witches name from some series I just can't remember which one.

lauraslops · 24/02/2023 19:19

@Viviennemary I think you're thinking of the main character in the game that is a boy. Zelda is the princess in the game and very much looks like a girl.

@DipperandMabel yes! Those are the only two zeldas I knew other than Robin Williams daughter so I don't think of anything horrible or negative when I hear the name

DipperandMabel · 24/02/2023 22:54

@lauraslops I’m born in the 80s so maybe it depends on your age what image Zelda brings to mind! It’s a cool name and I don’t think it is too similar to Matilda. Keep it on the shortlist ;)

to pp - Link is the boy in the Zelda games, Zelda is definitely a girl

Zelda is lovely. Is it too similar in sound to Matilda?
I also like Zelman - as in Sir Zelman Cowen.

DurdleSnore · 03/03/2023 09:20

I would automatically think of a witchy vibe or video game nerd, plus I’m not sure it works well with Matilda as too similar ‘ilda’ and ‘elda’ endings. Tilly and Zelly not great.

KnottyKnitting · 03/03/2023 09:44

Erm no! This is what comes to mind when I hear the name Zelda ( character from the Terrahawks!)

Orphlids · 03/03/2023 14:41

I quite like it. I don’t think it’s a particularly pretty name, but that’s not a negative thing. It’s exciting and strong, and much more interesting than so many popular names that are ten a penny these days.

I’ll throw Isolde into the mix too - it has a similar sound, but without the gaming association. We’ve got an Isolde but there are very few of them about and I want to boost the numbers!

Does she have a sister with a 'normal' name - if so I think I know her too 😊

What a weirdo.

You sound like the kind of person who dreams about sucking off Nigel Farage.

fUNNYfACE36 · 05/03/2023 02:31

daisypond · 05/03/2023 17:27

I like it. It’s a great name. Zelda Fitzgerald. I think it’s a bit clashy with Matilda, though.
