I know they are currently popular which does not bother me just looking for an old name for our DS

If it's not too ghoulish for you, I can recommend a walk around an old churchyard for inspiration. Some cracking names on the gravestones in oldparish churches.

Frederick/Freddie

That's the only one I like really. I love classics like James, Oliver and William.....

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 13/02/2023 20:32

Albert/Albie is quite nice too

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 13/02/2023 20:32

@AudTheDeepMinded good idea - I'm always doing this - not looking for baby names though - just fascinated about how usage has changed - so many wonderful surnames that have disappeared too.

Alfred. Someone incredibly dear to me, an original 1890s one, always Alfie. He'd have smiled to know his deeply unfashionable old man name became ubiquitous.

For other reasons, Frederick, Edgar and Edmund.

midsomermurderess · 15/02/2023 16:23

Douglas? I don’t see that as ‘old man’. But where I live it’s still a properly ok name. Not maybe common, but not almost extinct. It depends where you live really, doesn’t it.
