Classic and Royal Sounding Baby Names

Jenny7866 · 31/01/2023 13:20

We are looking at the classics for a baby name now but still can't decide! Here are some of our ideas:

Alexandra
Christina
Victoria
Catherine
Caroline
Angelica
Elisabeth
Samantha

Does anyone like any of these or perhaps have others to add?

(surname starts with G and is 2 syllables long)

I would use Elizabeth rather than Elisabeth (I'm assuming that you are in the UK).

Samantha and Angelica are not classic nor Royal names (someone will come along to tell me that I am wrong). Christina is nicer but makes me think of the singer.

Of the names on your list I like Elizabeth and Catherine the most. Other Royal names are:

Charlotte
Alice
Helena
Louisa
Beatrice
Mary
Georgina
Anne
Sophia

Margaret
Isabella
Henrietta
Maria
Katherine/Katharine
Jane
Philippa
Grace (thinking of Grace Kelly, latterly Princess Grace of Monaco)
Alexandrina (Queen Victoria's first name, apparently)

Where does the royal Samantha hail from? (out of genuine curiosity)

Samantha is sticking out like a sore thumb for me from that list.

Whereas I knew they were.

Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of King Henry II
Queen Joan, wife of King Henry IV
Empress Matilda, also known as Maude, daughter of King Henry I, who fought a civil war with her cousin King Stephen. Her son was King Henry II.

I add Joan of Acre, princess, daughter of Edward I

wyntersday · 31/01/2023 22:16

Look through the names of Queen Victoria’s daughters! Including middle names. She recycled quite a few so some appear more than once but I’m pretty sure that some will fit the bill.
Samantha, Christina and Angelica don’t sound remotely royal to me and to be royal, Elizabeth needs to be spelt with a Z not an S.

Hobbesmanc · 31/01/2023 22:16

Most already mentioned.

Dorothea is lovely and Theadora who was an empress.

Also really like Adelaide.

Er… they’re the names of some of the greatest queens in history. They’re just medieval, that’s all.

wyntersday · 31/01/2023 22:20

And Matilda wasn't just a Queen, she was also Empress Maude of England and France. Not bad for a woman in the 12th century.

One of my favourite books is about Matilda/Maud and the civil war she very almost won (and tbf she did, after a fashion). Highly recommended.
