Lana - moral dilemma

LaLuz7 · 26/01/2023 22:11

An acquitance from college who is heavily pregnant has just announced her chosen baby name on Instagram.

It's Lana.

Do I gently point out to her what it spells backwards, or do I assume she knows and doesn't care?

Lana is a perfectly normal name, I’d leave her to it.

Nimbostratus100 · 26/01/2023 22:12

tell her

Johnnysgirl · 26/01/2023 22:13

What does it matter what it spells backwards, though?

This. There are loads of people called Lana. She's not even your friends, just an acquaintance, it would be weird to message her and tell her that.

MintyCedric · 26/01/2023 22:14

Seriously?

I've known a Lana for over 30 years and it's never occurred to me what it spells backwards.

MuckyPlucky · 26/01/2023 22:14

Why on EARTH would you even notice that, let alone have it even cross you mind to reach out to a heavily pregnant woman who you barely know, to shit all over her happy time and lovely name choice?

Very, very odd.

To save a child from merciless totally avoidable future bullying...?

Your plan is to tell an acquaintance that her unborn baby's four letter name can be rearranged to make anal? Gently tell her I mean, that's your plan?

I think she will think you are completely off your rocker.

No normal people would think Lana = anal.

Also, not normal to upset people you barely know, when it’s nothing to do with you.

HTH.

I don't think you should worry, it will be absolutely fine.

Jellycats4life · 26/01/2023 22:19

I knew what you were going to say straight away, but even so, I wouldn’t say anything to her.

Babyroobs · 26/01/2023 22:19

I know a Lana and am good friends with her mum. We talk about pretty much everything to do with our kids and she has never mentioned her daughter being teased or bullied about the way her name is spelt backwards !

YellowDots · 26/01/2023 22:20

Save a child my arse. I've never heard of anything so preposterous.

ladygindiva · 26/01/2023 22:20

I know an 18 year old Lana, and a five year old one. Neither of them have ever to my knowledge suffered any negativity because of their name. Ezra backwards is arze, which is a bit like arse. So what.

It was actually pointed out on another thread and it stuck with me. I might not have noticed it otherwise but I cannot unsee it now.

I would be deeply unhappy if I was stuck with such a name

To be fair, I went to school with a girl called Alannah (Nickname Lana) and kids did always come out with the 'your name is anal if you spell it backwards'. But no, I wouldn't say anything. It's a nice name Lana, not anal that is🤣.

DappledThings · 26/01/2023 22:21

Lana was 227th most popular girls name in 2021. Not massive but in no way unusual enough to raise an eyebrow. It's a normal name. Because hardly anyone else is going to see lana and think anal. You're being really weird.

MuckyPlucky · 26/01/2023 22:21

Have you not heard of Lana Del Ray? She’s not exactly been held back by her name has she?

She's not in the UK.

I've never met a Lana over here. Ever in 31 years.

I know 3 people called Lana. One older, the others children. Not one has been bullied by their name. If kids want to bully they will, names, hair colour, skin colour, sex is mostly irrelevant. Some people are just bullies. Peter is a slang word for penis, Jonny for condom, Molly is slang for MDMA. All normal names.

ricepuddin · 26/01/2023 22:23

Right this comment is really going to highlight my intellectual hobbies ‐ is this from the Netflix show Too Hot To Handle? Even if that's not where you heard it, I feel like it's what popularised the whole Lana = Anal backwards thing recently. Tbf though even the cast took ages to realise that "twist".

Don't point it out to her. It sounds like a very primary school thing.

ricepuddin · 26/01/2023 22:25

@Krakenes and there are people called Dick and Willy. If it's a popular name no one will bat an eyelid

Fleur405 · 26/01/2023 22:25

This really isn’t a moral dilemma. Or any kind of a dilemma. You don’t need to involve yourself in this in any way!

BreviloquentBastard · 26/01/2023 22:25

Grow up and keep your beak out of other people's business.

Sux2buthen · 26/01/2023 22:25

There's quite a lot of online jokes about the name and as soon as I saw it in the thread title I knew what it would be.
