Lana - moral dilemma

LaLuz7 · 26/01/2023 22:11

An acquitance from college who is heavily pregnant has just announced her chosen baby name on Instagram.

It's Lana.

Do I gently point out to her what it spells backwards, or do I assume she knows and doesn't care?

I think you know someone who you don't like who's calling her baby Lana and you were hoping to drum up some negativity.

Moral dilemma! 🙄

Who cares if you 'cant unsee it'. You hardly know her.

LaLuz7 · 26/01/2023 22:26

MN has spoken. Quiet I shall stay 👌

We called our daughter Lana. When we chose her name it never even crossed our minds what her name was backwards, we just loved the name. It came up a couple of times at high school but she took it in her stride, fast forward and we still love her name. We do occasionally joke about the backwards spelling, but it's never caused any real issues for her.

We went to uni together but haven't kept in touch. So more than an acquitance but less than a friend.

She's a decent person, why would I want to start random drama?

You do know the definition of acquaintance, right? 😂

acquaintance
noun [ C/U ]
/əˈkweɪn·təns/

a person whom you know but do not know well and who is therefore not exactly a friend

Margo34 · 26/01/2023 22:35

Just carry about your life and let this acquaintance do the same!

arethereanyleftatall · 26/01/2023 22:42

This one always gets talked about on here, but I've never met anyone in real life who is remotely bothered by it, or even noticed, and I know quite a few lana's.
After all, I'm guessing there's loads of names that are anagrams of body parts.
Some even are straight up! Hello Dick and Fanny.

SpinningFloppa · 26/01/2023 22:58

Actually I remember my ex meeting someone called Lana and telling me it was “anal spelt backwards” so people definitely think it 🫣

Sux2buthen · 27/01/2023 06:31

I asked my kid Tnuc about this. He said it's fine

bellarosabella · 27/01/2023 06:51

Leave her to it.

It's a beautiful name.

I know a Lana who doesn't have problems.

bellarosabella · 27/01/2023 06:55

Oh and you're being way overdramatic, OP!

Lana is a normal name. Lana del Rey, Lana Turner.

If you told her "by the way your daughter's name spells "anal" backwards" you'd look like an extreme weirdo given that you're not close!

It's a lovely name, I'd rather be Lana than lots of other names that are popular now.

containsnuts · 27/01/2023 06:59

You're right that it's a name some kids might tease her about but its the same with lots of names, eg, William (willy), Ellie (smelly), Luna (lunatic). I wouldn't say anything. She's made her choice and announced it so I'd keep my opinions to myself and try and be happy for her.

Spottypaperdoll · 27/01/2023 07:02

If it was my SIL or a close friend I would mention it, but otherwise I would keep quiet.

20viona · 27/01/2023 07:05

Don't be a dickhead OP. My daughter is called Lana and of course we knew what it spelt backwards funnily enough people don't call each other their names backwards in day to day life Hmm

MuckyPlucky · 26/01/2023 22:21

Have you not heard of Lana Del Ray? She’s not exactly been held back by her name has she?

Her real name is Lizzy, Lana Del Rey is a stage name inspired by Lana Turner and a model of Ford car.

I’m a big fan of hers and I like it as a name, might use it for a pet one day!

20viona · 27/01/2023 07:08

@Sux2buthen love it 😂

liveforsummer · 27/01/2023 07:18

Very different responses to normal when this name is mentioned on mumsnet. Personally I would mention it. She might the devastated later when she realises, or she might know and not care, in which case no harm done!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/01/2023 07:24

I went to school with a Lana, and I hade a friend with an 11 yo DD called Lana.

The only timesI have ever seen anyone point out what it spells backwards is on MN.

CandlelightGlow · 27/01/2023 07:26

I'd find it weird, creepy and immature is someone said this to me. Lana is a pretty and not uncommon girl's name.

If someone came at me mentioning anal in relation to my baby's name and knew that was what came to mind for them, I'd be keeping them away from my DC!

😅

peaceandpotato · 27/01/2023 07:30

Tbh if anyone's going to mention it it might as well be you seeing as she's not your friend so she can just block you and not feel guilt

HelpMeGetThrough · 27/01/2023 07:31

To save a child from merciless totally avoidable future bullying...?

I went to school with a Lana as a teenager and was quite good friends with her. She didn't get bullied or teased about her name.

safeplanet · 27/01/2023 07:35

I went to school with a Lana, she wasn't bullied. Live in a multicultural, diverse area & people just don't get bullied for their names, kids don't know what's different.

SpinningFloppa · 26/01/2023 22:58

But the majority wouldn't bother mentioning it.

really? 😂
