It might vary by area but I know 4 Oakleys, all under 5. They're all from chavvy families.

cravingtoblerone · 18/01/2023 19:56

Lovely!

not a name I would choose but only because that's the name of the village I spent most of my life living in

There are a couple of villages called Oakley, I wonder if I live in the same one you did?

Sososadallthetime · 18/01/2023 20:04

That's my dogs name!

BiologicalWoman · 18/01/2023 20:11

It's Oakley Dokeley I guess.

ThePoshUns · 18/01/2023 20:12

I only know it as a surname

User16458769 · 18/01/2023 20:13

It sounds like a place name

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 18/01/2023 20:17

I don’t hate it but it reminds me of Oatly, the milk, and Okiley Dokliey.

Its also a bit too popular for me at 67th most popular boys name in England and Wales last year. It’s more popular than Michael, Elliott, Robin, Alfred, Anthony or Rupert.

MassiveSalad22 · 18/01/2023 20:19

But lots of -ley names are place names 😵‍💫 ley means meadow.
Shirley - bright meadow
Ashley - ash meadow (or ash forest I guess)
Bradley - broad meadow
Oakley - oak meadow

Also lots of common names are places - Adelaide, Victoria, Florence, sienna, Sydney, Rio.

Not really a reason not to use a name, if OP likes it 😵‍💫

wednesdayrobyn · 18/01/2023 20:34

Surprised by so many people saying it's a girls name. I know of 4 Oakley's. One in his 70s and the others all under 5. I think it's an ok name but seems very popular at the moment.

Ilovedthe70s · 18/01/2023 20:49

Talking tree in Everything’s Rosie.

isitginoclock · 18/01/2023 21:16

It's both chavvy and pretentious at the same time.

Adviceneeded200 · 18/01/2023 21:17

Ma

Adviceneeded200 · 18/01/2023 21:18

Mates dog is an Oakley!

Itsonlyagame · 18/01/2023 21:37

I think it’s fair to say that it takes one to know one.

CharitySchmarity · 20/01/2023 11:47

I like it, and I'm not usually a fan of surnamey names. I've never met anyone in real life with that name, although I've seen it used for a fictional character, who was quite cool. It definitely doesn't sound "babyish" to me. I picture quite a strong looking, outdoorsy man, although that doesn't mean it isn't suitable for a child too.

LightHousePanda · 20/01/2023 13:03

It's a pet name to me but you'd get used to it.

shieldmaiden7 · 20/01/2023 13:06

I know one, he's 16 now and it really suits him.

Uninterestedfamily · 20/01/2023 13:18

I'm torn.

I like it as a name.

But... I immediately hear Oakley Dokily in Ned Flanders voice.

I can't imagine an adult male walking into his office job and introducing himself as Oakley. It might be cute as a child but think about their future.

Mumsnet seem to think there's about 7 names adults will accept in the workplace.

In reality, someone walks in, tells you their name, and you accept their name and go back to work.

Highlighta · 20/01/2023 13:24

Oooh no....

I will get shortened to Oak.

And where I live that is a nick name for a big burly man. (different spelling, same sound)

'Check what that oke over there is doing'

etc

Gymtok · 20/01/2023 16:22

Some quite famous tik tokkers have just called their boy Oakley. I don't know any others but I like traditional names so it's not to my taste.
