Having a hard time choosing. I like Autumn and DH likes Rose. But not keen on either as it sounds like a description rather than a name. Open to any and all suggestions

You seriously sit around the staff room slagging off children?? You do realise what a terrible person (and professional) that makes you. Grow up and act like a proper, decent adult. You're paid to do a job - teach children, teach them well and teach them like equals. End of discussion

You’d be hard pressed to find a staff room in any part of the country (or, in fact, the world) that doesn’t discuss children’s names like this and, in fact, the parents of the children we teach. 🤷🏻‍♀️ And it’s not about slagging off the child as an individual, but just wondering why a parent wouldn’t think of the consequences for the poor child as they grow older!

It goes without saying that those conversations remain in the staff room and do not seep into teaching and all the children are treated fairly and equally. Names, backgrounds or annoying parents don’t impact our professionalism and in the classroom environment there’s no discrimination.

You have to understand that in any environment, professional or otherwise, people make comments about the things that happen around them and, while they aren’t always the epitome of politeness, it’s natural. Please don’t be naive about this and think otherwise. I’m sure you, yourself, have had conversations before about a colleague that did X or wore X or a person that did X.

Don’t be hysterical.

The PP didn’t say she sits around slagging off children, she said she rolls her eyes at some parents’ name choices.

Names carry associations for teachers because teachers are human like everyone else.

This name doesn’t have helpful connotations and she is simply pointing that you.

whateverthisis · 02/12/2022 09:41

OP as you said you like the 'i' ending as it matches your name, have you considered other names ending in i? Astri is unusual and quite beautiful. Leilani? Naomi? I know it isn't what you asked but given the reaction you have got here, just thought it might be worth considering.

^^ gave their DC a yooo-nique name and spelling

My daughters dog is called Storm. He’s known as Stormy. Sweet natured chestnut working cocker. The name suits him well.

Rose is beautiful.

I was going to say, like others, that no middle name would be better. But honestly I feel like this child will want one just so she does not have to do by her Christian name.

Honestly OP, and I mean this really kindly, you are bringing someone into the world who hasn’t chosen to be brought into the world, and where they have to function and relate and work. I guarantee the prejudice (whether snobbery or not) they will receive for turning up at a job interview, or on the first day of school, and saying “Hi, I’m Stormi” will be almost insurmountable. You are severely severely limiting your child’s life chances by doing this. The people they mix with, the expectations or lack there of places upon them - EVERYTHING. There has been so much academic research done on this - it’s not just anecdotal Mumsnet “I hate Jayden/Tyler/Destinii-Rose” attitudes.

Could you choose another “unusual” name that doesn’t sound like a prostitute’s? Doesn’t need to be “Ruth” or “Sarah”. “Autumn” wouldn’t be my pick personally but I think it could be a lovely name for your little girl?

Good luck!

DameHelena · 02/12/2022 09:42

I wouldn't have a middle name at all with that name; I think it sounds nice on its own with a surname, and pretty much anything would end up sounding like a description.

RandomMusings7 · 02/12/2022 09:42

People judging others for their names should be ashamed, genuinely.

people who give innocent kids awful trashy made-up names should be ashamed, genuinely.

There, fixed it for you :)

Daniela?

PickyEaters · 02/12/2022 09:42

"Stormi"? Oh dear, that poor child.
As she will undoubtedly be changing her name at some point anyway why not go all out and give her Ashleigh, Britney, or Courtney as her second name.

Yes, and is now wondering what the teachers REALLY think 👀

KeepingTheWaterOut · 02/12/2022 09:43

I've skipped to the end after reading the first four pages., so someone else might have said this.

The first time I came across the name was Stormie Omartian. There seem to be lots of suggestions that it's a stripper name, but to me it's the name of a conservatively dressed, married, evangelical Christian woman.

www.stormieomartian.com/

It's weird how first impressions of a name can stay fixed.

Having said that, Stormie Omartian's real name is Virginia, so she chose Stormie.

I don't hate the name. Lots of nature names are in now.

The trouble with stormi as a first name is that it is a descriptive word. I would at least use a common middle name so your daughter has an option of using a normal name as she gets older.

HCPs do it as well BTW. There are certain names that are very much over-represented in the population of children who are known to the child protection team......

Butchyrestingface · 02/12/2022 09:44

If you are adamant you are having this name would you consider Storm instead of Stormi?

Then people will think she name her kid after Ronan Keating's wife. I'm not sure which is worse. Grin

fridascruffs · 02/12/2022 09:44

My niece is called Storm, she's a lawyer in the States. There was a full blown storm the night she was born, thunder and lightning and everything, which is rare where she lives, so I always thought there was a good reason for her name. No-one who met her would downgrade her on the basis of her name. Do what you like, it'll be fine. A friend gave me some good advice- give the child a bland anonymous middle name that they can use if they hate the 'distinction' of the first name. Then it'll be their choice how they present themselves later in life.

Don't really care what you call your baby, but I have to thank all the posters who have responded and made me actually laugh out loud. Favourites were:

Ferry-crossing
Wevva
McStormface

Can't remember the last time I laughed. Really needed this today, thanks MN.

omg, Stormi McStormface, best ever ridiculous name! That one really made me laugh! 🤣🤣
But seriously OP, don’t use Stormi. It’s AWFUL.

RandomMusings7 · 02/12/2022 09:45

Something to ponder - it's already hard enough to be taken seriously as a woman in a professional environment, even more so if male-dominated. When you sign every work email with "Regards, Stormi" you are making it 100x harder than it needs to be.

Unless your aspirations for your daughter ar more along the lines of adult entertainer... in which case do ignore me.

B1993 is a teacher like I'm a nun. Teachers have enough problems dealing with luck of funding, classroom sizes, bullying, family issues, poverty etc etc to be rolling their eyes at the name of a student when diversity means they spend a fair amount of time trying to pronounce the name of their student, let alone rolling their eyes or making statements like their name will be a life sentence for them.

Some posts are beyond ridiculous.

Herejustforthisone · 02/12/2022 09:46

What about Leylandii as a middle name, and then pronouncing Stormi so it matches?
