Otto, rollo, Humphrey….or similair

We are due with our little boy (brother to Rupert, Ophelia and Tabitha) but I’m struggling with boys names!

would love suggestions for:
• nicknames for Humphrey (not keen on humps!)
• full name for Rollo (Rowland has been suggested but husband hates it)
• upper class names similair to the above - ideally somethings that slightly unique but not too out there!

OP posts:

I can’t tell if this is a piss take or not.

I think it is 🤔

‘For ideas for names from people who are similarly trying to make themselves sound like they come from better breeding than they do, try looking at the names Jacob Rees-Mogg has given his children’: jeez, that’s snarky, and chippy.

Most of them are called after appropriate saints, or heroes. The youngest is named Anselm, an English Saint whom anyone should be proud to be aligned to.

Rollo - it's a full name and imo it's gorgeous.

Suggestions:
Ivo
Darius
Ansel
Cosmo
Ambrose
Thaddeus
Hugo
Rufus
Caspian
Ludovic
Barnaby
Bertram

I think it's really weird to avoid names that sound upper class purely on that basis. It's downright depressing.

Are parents really so concerned about what people with very small minds will think?

Is staying in your lane such an ingrained habit that the people who lose by so doing take it upon themselves to police the class boundaries so assiduously?

And why assume the OP must be a pleb?

kenadams86 · 05/10/2022 18:31

Please don't call your child rollo or Humphrey

Otis
Hugo
Rory
Wilfred/Wilbur

You could have Freddy for Humphrey, but then you might as well just call him Freddy.

MyBuggyIsOutToGetMe · 05/10/2022 18:33

I like the suggestion of Hector.

How about:

Edmund
Aubrey
Alexander (not unique but goes well)
Charles

upper class names similair to the above

It must be exhausting being so insecure.

KirstenBlest · 05/10/2022 18:47

Rollo and Humphrey are fine, but Otto is hideous

Rowland and Rollo are completely different names

For ideas for names from people who are similarly trying to make themselves sound like they come from better breeding than they do, try looking at the names Jacob Rees-Mogg has given his children. I believe you'll find what you're looking for there.

Came here to say this 😂

Christ, some right miseries commenting on this thread.

We considered Rollo for our DS. We love a bit of history! It’s a full name in itself. We went for Magnus in the end. I really like Otto too. Humphrey is also nice, but I feel it lacks the bit of edge the others have. It’s a bit more gentle old man than dashing young hunk. Another name I really love is Uther, King Arthur’s much more exciting and charismatic father.

KirstenBlest · 05/10/2022 18:55

Pick a name from a book by Jilly Cooper. Perdita or Lysander, perhaps.

ImpunityJane · 05/10/2022 19:00

Hector is a great suggestion.

Otherwise:
Orlo
Edmund
Edgar
Clement
Clarence
Claude
Eustace
Cyril

Wilfred - wilf
This is the front runner for us and it goes so well with your other names x

PrincessofWales · 05/10/2022 19:07

Sound like dogs names.

LadyHooHa · 05/10/2022 19:10

I'm in Name Heaven here. OP, I have a Humphers.
Some of my other DC's names have been mentioned, but not all of them (thank goodness, as I quite like them not coming up on every other name thread).
I have a Valentine among them, if you want to add that to your list.

AmandaMirandaPanda · 05/10/2022 19:26

I like Rollo. It definitely has a history of use as a full name in Scotland, although at the moment it may be most closely associated with Young Ian's dog in Outlander. I think it's also sometimes used for Roland, Rudolf, or Rolf ... perhaps too close to Rupert?

How about Malo? he was a 7th century Welsh saint who really got around - he was on the journey with St Brendan who many people say "discovered" America, then he came back to Europe and went to Brittany and founded the monastic settlement at Saint-Malo, and now the city bears his name.

Or how about Frey, short for Humphrey?

Foxtrot101 · 05/10/2022 20:04

I feel like mumsnet has some serious double standards when everyone freaks out if someone says a name is chav or downmarket but then gets all on board for suggestions for upper class names!

GobbledyGeek · 05/10/2022 20:18

Cedric
Dominic
Richard
Sebastian
Jonathan

No matter what you call him, his mates will find an embarrassing nickname and call him either that or his surname anyway.

Couldn't have a Freddy, I imagine it's not top drawer enough for them 🙄 I'll refrain from mentioning there is an Ophelia living on the same council estate as me, who likely has the nickname Oaf, maybe not just for the upper class. Okay maybe I won't refrain

So you're suggesting that people should like 'chav' names as much as 'upper class names'? Confused

Don't you think that many people prefer the latter?
