DD's best friend is called Shirley. She's 6. I secretly think it's horrible.

It washes over me now Hatrick!

each to their own!

niceglasses · 24/01/2008 22:08

Yeah I've had it an'all and my sons name is pretty common......I think when you've been on the receiving end you button it a bit.

I know all the arguments about it being the web, blah blah de blah. I still think its out of order, and this particular thread just downright odd and bad intentioned.

Perhaps she was named after a much loved relative. Or perhaps her parents just liked the name. Someone told me that I shouldn't have called my DD what I did because both her and DS's names end with the same sound so difficult to say when you say them both together. So what. My kids, we chose names we liked. Of course you should feel free to rant on Mumsnet, it's partly what it's here for. BUT there can't be many 6 year olds called Shirley. I think you might have just outed yourself....I just hope her Mum's not reading this.....

seeker · 24/01/2008 22:16

Desperate to know what it was now Paula!

I generally believe in living and letting live, but I really do think that there are some names that are downright cruel to give a child. And if people suggest a name on here and the vast majority react badly to it, then maybe that's how most people will react all through the child's life and it'a time to think again.

The people who say "I love unusual names" should stop and think what it would feel like to spend your life saying "No, it's....." "It's spelt......"every single time they have to give their name. My name is not unusual at all, but it has two spellings, and mine is the less common one. I have never, ever not had to correct the spelling if someone else writes it down, and it is just boring, and tedious.

Desiderata · 24/01/2008 22:19

I don't dislike anybodies choice of name, and I think it's real bad manners to bring it up on a public forum.

You can't help the name your parents gave you. Taking the piss out of a kid's name is somewhat akin to taking the piss out of a disability, in the sense that they can't help it.

And it's all subjective anyway. But I can't help feeling that branflake81 doesn't like her dd's best friend, simply because she's called Shirley.

Am I wrong, or am I right?

unknownrebelbang · 24/01/2008 22:19

Why would you hate your child's friend's name?

Hate is such a strong word.

norkmaiden · 24/01/2008 22:21

a name is a name is a name!

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 24/01/2008 22:21

yes seeker - i get called 'amanda' all the time and its not my name

met another woman with my name we laughed about getting 'amanda' and not correcting it

fingerwoman · 24/01/2008 22:21

nearly everyone I spoke to about it hated my girls choice for ds2.
i am still going to use it though if I ever have a little girl.
and dp will just have to get used to it as well lol

Maidamess · 24/01/2008 22:23

I don't hate anyones name. But I feel sorry for children named as fashion accessories by their parents, eg, Kitty Boo, Daisy Blue, Maisie Flippin Moo.

How is that person going to feel when they are grown up and in the work place? "Ladies and Gentlemen, I'd like to introduce the first female chair of ICI, Kitty Boo" Daft!!

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 24/01/2008 22:25

i just think that is not true anymore

seeker · 24/01/2008 22:27

Why would people call you Amanda when your name's Paula.........

No, I can't say she has!

She has a lot of friends, too.

When she went back to nursery after nearly a fortnight off for chickenpox, it was really something to see all her classmates asking where she'd been, and how they'd missed her.

She has a wee boy who is sweet on her, he has a name I would not give a son of mine, but he suits it well and he's a lovely lad.

expatinscotland · 24/01/2008 22:31

My dd's have Gaelic names.

Boco · 24/01/2008 22:31

DDs friend is called newsoftheworld and i'm still not sure about it.

seeker · 24/01/2008 22:34

She should meet my son, Telegraph.
