DD's best friend is called Shirley. She's 6. I secretly think it's horrible.

OP posts:

Hatrick - your last post in particular is absolutely spot on

And seeker - I see what you're saying, but surely there are very few people who never have to spell out at least part of their name, and all the more so nowadays as unusual spellings are becoming more commonplace. So unless you're called something like Peter Smith you just have to put up with spelling it out

Maidamess · 24/01/2008 22:38

Hardly slating Hatrick, just not my cup of tea. But each to their own.

I think it was the Boo add-on, wasn't it, rather than Kitty? I think that's not quite so traditional.

Kitty is lovely

seeker · 24/01/2008 22:46

I think there are tons of names which don't need spelling - apart from to the occasional seriously dopy offcial person. I really think that deliberately choosing a name that's condemning a person to a life time of telephone conversations that go 'This is x. X! It's spelt x. No, with a.. Yes it is unusual. No, I don't think my mother was a fan of... Yes I was born in 2007 -how did you guess?" when they could be called Tom, Jessica or Emma is a bit peverse!

TellusMater · 24/01/2008 22:46

Am desperate to know PY's ds's name...

SpawnChorus · 24/01/2008 22:48

I love love love the name Kitty BTW. I know a little girl called Kitty and it suits her soooo much. I also went to university with a girl/young woman called Kit, which I thought was fab too. Kitty/Kit are just innately lovely sounding names IMO.

expatinscotland · 24/01/2008 22:48

isn't kitty short for katherine?

SpawnChorus · 24/01/2008 22:48

I think I meant inherently rather than innately

Kewcumber · 24/01/2008 22:49

I think Kitty Boo may well decide she is Katherine at the point she is elected to the board of ICI...

generally don;t really care what friends DC's are called, but did wince a little at Mabel. Have got used to it now though.

fingerwoman · 24/01/2008 22:52

or kitty boo may love her name and just wonder why they're introducing her using her middle name.
though, beingt he fiurst female chair of ICI she probably won't really give a damn what other people think, being a highly succesful person despite her "fashion accessory" name

shirleysmum · 24/01/2008 22:52

What's wrong with the name Shirley anyway?

Kewcumber · 24/01/2008 22:53

oh bugger "mabelsmum" is going to appear in a minute

SpawnChorus · 24/01/2008 22:54

But seeker, you are ruling out all sorts of perfectly 'normal' names like Katy/Katie, Katherine/Cartherine, Jonathan/Jonathon etc. And seeing as loads of surnames need to spelled out you might as well go the whole hog

fingerwoman · 24/01/2008 22:55

i love mabel.
If I have a dd she will be Mavis

and you know, this generation of kids are going to grow up hearing all kinds of names, both unusual "celeb" names, made up names, and old fashioned names that are coming back
and I doubt that when they are older and in the workplace that anyone will bat an eyelid.

unless of course they're brought up to be as narrow-minded and rude as their parents.

mabelsmum · 24/01/2008 22:57

how anyone called Kewcumber can wince at the name Mabel, I really don't know. I love Mabel. But now I WOULD wince at Mavis.

SpawnChorus · 24/01/2008 22:58

fingerwoman - "I doubt that when they are older and in the workplace that anyone will bat an eyelid unless of course they're brought up to be as narrow-minded and rude as their parents" Exactly

expatinscotland · 24/01/2008 22:59

kew!

Chuffinnora · 24/01/2008 22:59

Someone once started a thread saying "I think * is a horrible name and makes the child sound poor". Obviously it was my dds name and I never forgave that poster. She didn't know it was my DD's name but how rude and crass to air her attitude like that. So glad I never see her name around any more. I know these are just words on a screen but we all have very emotional attachments to our children's names. This is not a nice thread.

And PaulaYates - I've worked out what your DS's name is and it's lovely. I'm at that thread! What weird reactions they all had.

unknownrebelbang · 24/01/2008 23:05

I work with a Mavis, was a bit at first (not hate you understand) but once I got to know her it's second nature now.

I have a shortened form of a not unusual name, that additionally is not the usual spelling. No, it's NOT Victoria, I was christened Vikki, yes that's right two kk's, no e, no y, blah blah. You just get used to it.

EachPeachPearMum · 24/01/2008 23:05

Hah - I know Paula's ds's name! It's pretty unusual, though not sure why it would be unpopular? It has an interesting meaning and forebearers too. FWIW OP did say secretly as in in your inner heart! I come across many, many names I don't like, or hate the spelling of, of I think are just plain funny or outrageous, but I would never comment to a child, or judge a child for their name.

I do judge their parents though

'Starskey DeNiro' anyone?

ConnieDescending · 24/01/2008 23:06

This threads just a bit of fun surely?? Seems a bit silly to take things so personally......have confidence in your name choices.

I wince at Finlay and Madison both totally bleurghhhhhhhhhhh and the unfortunate names of some of my DC's friends.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 24/01/2008 23:08

gosh there are some Poirotesque folk on here!

well done - and isn't it just the softest lovliest but most manly of names
