Hello, just wanting to get some feedback on the following boy names for our second son. I love these names but they are pretty out there. What are your thoughts on:

Cub, Colt and Horizon (Rize nn)

Thank you!

I would also suggest River or Forest.

Cub is like a nickname & won't suit a grown man
Horizon will get people saying "oh look who's coming over the Horizon"
Colt makes me think of Cult

Take the piss is maybe a bit strong but we'd definitely laugh and I'm still teaching. Not in a mean spirited way particularly and certainly not to the child's face. Obviously people disavowing all knowledge are better people than me but when I taught a Beyonce, we laughed🤷‍♀️

I don't know why, probably because it's a noun and nothing like a name. I know cub and colt are nouns but Horizon just feels a bit...silly.

I think because I teach where there are unusual African and Asian names, so the culture is never to comment on them.

godyouarerude · 07/08/2022 12:34

To those picking on the OP’s misuse of the word unique: why do you care? Surely you get the gist of what she’s saying? When I am in IRL company and someone uses a word incorrectly, I would never ever correct them, much less mock them. It’s bloody mean spirited and shows a lack of manners. (I actually remember the moment in my childhood when my mum explained that to me.) I’d rather be the person to misuse a word, than be known for such shitty manners.

Seashell
Seashore
Aqua
Cloud
Woodland
Island

Rowen32 · 07/08/2022 12:35

Teachers definitely make fun of children's names (not in front of them) but they definitely do... You can also tell a lot about a child by what name they've been given even before you meet them..

Same as where I teach but we wouldn't comment on a name because it's not English!

Bootothegoose · 07/08/2022 12:44

I get the spirit but the names all land a bit flat for me, they feel quite try hard.

What about River, Fern, Atlas, Oakley, Ivar etc. a bit more earthy.

Bootothegoose · 07/08/2022 12:48

Sunny/Sonny is also lovely and not uncommon. I know a couple of baby Oceans.

Raine, Forrest, Heath and Huxley are also options. Maybe even Bryn if you want a more classic approach.

My first son's name is Ocean Hart ☺️ I know they are unusual, hence seeking feedback. I thought Scout is so popular now and used to be super unique, so why not Cub which is the boy version? I heard Colt as a nickname for Colton which is a more common boy name. Horizon was a random name I heard on a baby name podcast. All three names are actually names of babies, they are ranked on the charts so they aren't totally unranked. But I do get that they are very different and really out there.

Poor kids

redbigbananafeet · 07/08/2022 12:49

Maerias - Asian and African names aren't unusual. No one would laugh at an actual name. Nouns for names and pretentiousness is laughable.

Seashell
Seashore
Aqua
Cloud
Woodland
Island

Yeah we'd laugh at those.

HeartofTeFiti · 07/08/2022 12:51

Cub and Colt and Horizon aren’t really names though, you need to have a reason to choose a name. Otherwise you may as well just call him Mackerel, or Fog, or Equator.

Rize would make me worry about jokes about whether he can get it up.

Musmerian · 07/08/2022 12:51

@redbigbananafeet @Maireas - I’ve never worked in a school where those kinds of conversations didn’t happen behind the scenes. Teachers are humans. Your school sounds v straitlaced.

Exactly, teachers are people. Who wouldn't raise their eyebrows at someone introducing themselves as Seashell ffs?

Thank you, I really appreciate this ❤️

Orion
Beckett
Phoenix
Ash
Acer
Ivo
I think my favourite nature inspired name would be Silas.

Beelezebub · 07/08/2022 13:00

Zeus

Divebar2021 · 07/08/2022 13:00

I like names that are different…I can remember DDs school had a Sunshine when she started. I have no idea why everyone has to be so conforming although my DH is very conventional so I never had the opportunity to unleash my choices. For boys I liked….
Locke
Gray / Grey
Kit
Flint (😂…. I’m just being honest)

I think Colt is ok and I don’t associate it with a gun. I don’t like Horizon and Cub is a nickname to me. I quite like the much maligned Fox over Wolf.

PMAmostofthetime · 07/08/2022 13:08

@Ellen123456 I like Colt, lovely unique but not too out there.

olivida · 07/08/2022 13:23

Imagine a grown man named Cub or Horizon.

Colt is slightly better as a nickname for Colton but only because it's an actual name. It's still not very nice.

I like Ocean, it's quite popular in the US but thought it was a girl's name? maybe unisex. A name with a similar vibe to Ocean would be River, Rowan, Robin.

Yep. Straightlaced. No mocking allowed. No comments on appearance, either! It's amazing.

Zeus

Now that is a great name!

Maireas · 07/08/2022 13:26

I quite like Fox.
As in Fox Mulder.....

romdowa · 07/08/2022 13:30

Since you like colt , what about colton? You could use colt as a nn

DeedIDo · 07/08/2022 13:30

I know a toddler called Flint and a grown man called Rise. Both names have grown on me.
