Theobur - a made up name

Me and my other half really like Theo but we also really like the name Wilbur, but we are not as keen on Will as a nickname. So we came up with Theobur, Theo will be their nickname but just like Theobur as a full name, a bit more to it. Can't see it is a real name though, is it ok to make up a name??

The thing with names is they carry meaning. A made up name doesn't.

All names were made up at some time

OgdensGoneNutFlake · 08/06/2022 20:42

How about Balonz?

astoundedgoat · 08/06/2022 20:42

I see you preempted me on Tolkien above with Theoden! Solid name. Love it. Thorin is also gorgeous.

Popsicle33 · 08/06/2022 20:43

It's dreadful. Please don't give your child a ridiculous made up name.

MeanderingGently · 08/06/2022 20:43

Theobur is lovely, I can't see any problem with it if that's what you'd like for your child. If it were me, I'd certainly do it.....go for it.

mathanxiety · 08/06/2022 20:44

If you don't like Theodore then don't mangle it, just drop it.

If you're worried about the shortening of Wilbur to Will, then insist on the full name.

Or start again on a list. There are lots more names out there.

Theobur looks and sounds really off, imo.

Truly awful

Couldn’t you call him Theodor Wilbur? I mean sure you can make up a name but Theobur seems a bit pointless as Theodore is so similar and is a real name.

I was just about to say this. Theodore Wilbur sounds really lovely 😍

mathanxiety · 08/06/2022 20:49

@iCorvidae, yes, all names were made up initially, as was all language, so let's just assign names according to sounds we like.

Dishwasher
Cabinet
Tiles
Blender
Stove-Top
Fabbyoopla
Deedlydwish
Swivel

Terrible, sorry - has Made Up Name all over it - because it is

VivienneDelacroix · 08/06/2022 20:53

Thelonious - Theo for short.

VivienneDelacroix · 08/06/2022 20:55

Also, I know two Wilburs - neither have ever been called Will.

tiredanddangerous · 08/06/2022 20:55

Good grief no

Bagzzz · 08/06/2022 20:55

Remember your name will have to be used by your adult son for official purposes even if you use Theo.

He is quite likely to spend time spelling and maybe explaining that his name is not the Theobald or Theodore. He may or may not mind, I’ve seen mixed on Mn from people with similar that either like being individual or yearn to at least have a name that is more common.

Google the name and you get a health app called Obur or a book and something for pintrest.

Dreikanter · 08/06/2022 20:57

Theophilus Wildebeest might tick your boxes, no?

MrsMitford3 · 08/06/2022 20:57

Of course everyone will think you are saying Theodore. It is a ridiculous name.

Unless a huge fan of the letter "B" I cannot see how you like Theobur but not
Theodore???

Bonkers

Agree Theodore Wilbur is nice

MenaiMna · 08/06/2022 20:58

Theodolphius, Theodosius, Theophilus are all real names to choose from.

KirstenBlest · 08/06/2022 20:58

Theodore is such a lovely name.
It really isn't.
Theo has become meh through over use and Theodore is just part of the trend

Veryverycalmnow · 08/06/2022 21:00

Names all gave to start somewhere. I wonder if Theober could be his nickname though if you go with Theo?

Fivebeanchilli · 08/06/2022 21:02

I know a Theon which is quite nice.
I like Theo and Theodore but Theobur doesn't sound attractive to me.

Moosake · 08/06/2022 21:03

I really like it. Which surprised me.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/06/2022 21:04

It’s ridiculous.

NohoHank · 08/06/2022 21:05

It sounds silly.

IaltagDhubh · 08/06/2022 21:14

Combining Theodore and Wilbur, my mind automatically comes up with TheoDurr and TheoBore. Theobur is kind of the worst of both - Theo Thick and Dull. Just call him Theo , it’s a perfectly good name. He won’t thank you for Theobur.

20viona · 08/06/2022 21:16

Awful
