Theobur - a made up name

Me and my other half really like Theo but we also really like the name Wilbur, but we are not as keen on Will as a nickname. So we came up with Theobur, Theo will be their nickname but just like Theobur as a full name, a bit more to it. Can't see it is a real name though, is it ok to make up a name??

Hmm thing is i really don't like the name Theodore

Then just call him Theo Wilbur? At least Theodore has a nice meaning unlike Wilbur "gift of God" vs "wild boar" so effectively you be naming your child God boar

MrsMoastyToasty · 09/06/2022 00:26

It sounds like someone with a blocked nose trying to say "fever".

I really like it. Which surprised me.

Me too. It just sounds unusual but not outlandish. He'll spend his whole life spelling it out but so do I and I have a pretty straight forward name that anyone with half a brain should be able to spell. Go for it!

powershowerforanhour · 09/06/2022 00:32

I'm picturing an untrained cockerpoo on a flexilead, with one of those jaunty neckerchief things some groomers put on them as a USP.

BreadInCaptivity · 09/06/2022 00:57

Go big or go home....

Theobur Dorewil gets my vote...

A perfect mash up of names that will certainly provide entertainment for everyone you and your child encounters for a lifetime!!!

And it's free!!!!

Revel in your ingenuity and ignore the sneers of others who deign to give their children actual "names".

Ready yourself for the thrill of righteousness indignation you can assert when other people everyone misspells/pronounces his name incorrectly and see it as a legacy you can pass on to your child 🎉.

Prepare ahead for the "talk" about how a special child needed a special name and practice the face Shock when they tell you they wish they were called Tom or any other simple name they will never have to tell anyone how to spell or explain the origins of.

What's not to like about this plan? 👍

I was at school with a chap with a made up name. His take on it was (at 17) was that he wished his parents had even considered the lifetime of explanations he would have to give and misspellings he would have to live with.

I totally agree with this.

My DD knew a boy with just such a name when in sixth form. It was a huge embarrassment to him. Whenever he had to introduce himself to anyone new he always qualified it by saying that his parents hated him when he was born. It made me feel sad for him.

OP, please reconsider. Don't saddle your child with a ridiculous name like this. It even looks silly.

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 09/06/2022 01:03

All names are made up. If you like it, use it.

Shedcity · 09/06/2022 01:05

Just call him Theodore Wilbur
you can nn theobur

or what about theobald instead of Theodore

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 09/06/2022 01:07

Bald is worse than Bur imo.

What about Baldbur, or Burbald?

Good solid names! 😉

Fleur405 · 09/06/2022 01:24

So you absolutely can make up a name - I guess all names were originally made up at some point!

However, Theobur sounds clunky and I agree he will spend his entire life having the following conversation:

“Theodore?

No, Theobur

Theo - what?

Bur. Theo-bur. t-h-e-o-b-u-r

That’s unusual…”

Also isn’t Theoden a character from the Lord of the Rings (the King of Rohan)? Never heard it as a name otherwise.

pinklavenders · 09/06/2022 07:36

The thing with names is they carry meaning. A made up name doesn't.

No, many names have no meaning whatsoever and EVERY single name was once made up!

stairgates · 09/06/2022 07:44

I prefer it if it is said as, Tee Oh Buh, rather than Theo Bur, sorry not much help.
And I cannot guess the anagram but am trying😂

RollOnWinter · 09/06/2022 07:45

It's a ridiculous name.

ElenaSt · 09/06/2022 07:45

Hideous name.

BlueTitSmilingAtMe · 09/06/2022 01:03

All names are made up. If you like it, use it.

People always say this but it’s like saying ‘all words are made up.’ It doesn’t mean I can start saying ‘pass the jabalawa. The JABALAWA! Yes it’s a made up word but all words are made up.’

Some names have a long history of use and so will be recognised by many people. Some are made up. If you want to use a made up one use it for yourself and let your kid have a real name.

ilovemyelectriccar · 09/06/2022 07:59

Theo is also short for Theobald, Theophilus or Theodoric.

SoggyPaper · 09/06/2022 08:09

If this were a predominantly North American site, I think the responses would be much more encouraging. Combining bits of names to make new ones is fairly ordinary.

a North American friend couldn’t agree with her partner between Laurel and Clarissa for their daughter. So they split the difference with Lorissa. It’s not been a controversial choice.

And it’s a combination of Theo and Wilbur serves as an easy explanation of how the name came about, should anyone ask.

Theophilius might be a ‘real name’. But it’s hardly less remarkable in a white British child with no Greek connections than Theobur. And the story that his parents wanted Theobur but felt they had to use a ‘real name’ is a worse one for explanations.

SoggyPaper · 09/06/2022 08:12

Or theophilus even.

Its so not recognisable as a real name to most white British people that it doesn’t matter if it’s theophilus, theosopholes, theologic or Theobur. 🤣

theobur is probably the easiest of those to learn to spell.

Blaze1886 · 09/06/2022 08:12

If you want him to be teased at school and later at work then go right ahead

bobbythevet · 09/06/2022 08:19

This isn't twilight, this is a real child that will have to live with this decision for the rest of his life.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 09/06/2022 08:20

No, it's silly. Aside from its made-upness, it's just not nice.

Just call him Theo if you don't like Theodore. Or Theon, for a Game of Thrones vibe.
