Theobur - a made up name

Me and my other half really like Theo but we also really like the name Wilbur, but we are not as keen on Will as a nickname. So we came up with Theobur, Theo will be their nickname but just like Theobur as a full name, a bit more to it. Can't see it is a real name though, is it ok to make up a name??

We really like theodosia. I think it's a 'girls' name but really who cares. The boy version is theodosius. 'gods gift' - Greek.

HereIAmBrainTheSizeOfAPlanet · 08/06/2022 21:21

Good grief just call him Theo Wilbur

No Theodore reminds me of Alvin and the chipmunks, it is not that strange to like one variant of a name a not another. Also like Theoden which is a real name, just like Theobur more.

Theoden isn’t a real name, it was made up by Tolkien for his character. Theobur sounds like a fantasy character too. Just call your DS Theo.

Back in Anglo-Saxon times all the beginnings and all the endings were put together however parents wanted. Theofric, Ethelbald, Friedeburg...

Theobur means "fortress of god" which is a pretty good name if you ask me.

mathanxiety · 08/06/2022 21:37

I don't think you'd ever find the name Theofric in Anglo Saxon times.

It has a Greek root and AS ending, which wasn't done.

Also, Friedeburg isn't a given name. It's a small town in Lower Saxony.

It’s terrible, theyl have a lifetime of being misheard with people thinking they are called theodor or theobear. You aren’t naming a teddy or a posh fluffy dog. Theo Wilbur works if you like those names.

Anonnnnnnm · 08/06/2022 21:49

Sorry I think it's awful

lightand · 08/06/2022 21:51

I know someone who made up a name. A bit of a pain, but I dont think the mum, or now grown up child, mind.
The name had an extra letter in it.

Bettethebuilder · 08/06/2022 21:54

No, it doesn’t work. It’s a mishmash of two linguistic roots, so it really jars. Theodore Wilbur is fine. Or there are other real Theo-type names.

ArtVandalay · 08/06/2022 21:58

😂 Don't do it - it's completely silly and he won't thank you for it.

She can calm her child whatever she likes... It's just not to your taste 😆

Then why bother asking in the first place?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 08/06/2022 23:13

I'd prefer Edwathon or Malchard or Phildrew.

YourWinter · 08/06/2022 23:13

Save stupid names for a cuddly toy… or a plant… why would you be so cruel to a child?

Please no OP

DelurkingAJ · 08/06/2022 23:36

I was at school with a chap with a made up name. His take on it was (at 17) was that he wished his parents had even considered the lifetime of explanations he would have to give and misspellings he would have to live with.

HollowTalk · 08/06/2022 23:43

Staynow · 08/06/2022 20:31

You don't like Theodore but you do like Theobur???

This made me laugh out loud.

whatevernextmrprimeminister · 08/06/2022 23:44

I must be the only one not living this. Sorry, OP.

I just hear Theobore, which I think is a tad unfortunate.

RedRec · 08/06/2022 23:47

Dreadful.

Afrodizzyak · 08/06/2022 23:55

How about Theo Burt, two unmade up names 😄.

ChagSameachDoreen · 09/06/2022 00:11

🤮

largeprintagathachristie · 09/06/2022 00:17

I’d think that was a spelling mistake for Theodore. Sorry.
