What do you all think of Kit as a name?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Litt1eDorrit · 21/04/2022 19:10

I love it…but I really like names from Charles Dickens works 😂

PiratePetespajamas · 21/04/2022 19:12

So cute - and lovely on a grown up too. Go for it!

AccommodatingAlice · 21/04/2022 19:13

Well I’m of an age where it firstly makes me think of Knight Rider.

it then made me think of Kit Heath, it’s a nice name.

alterego2 · 21/04/2022 19:14

I tend to prefer full names (eg Christopher/Christine/Catherine) and then using the short version as a nickname because I believe it gives the DC more choices as adults. But I accept I may well be old fashioned in that view. Having said that - I love Kit as a name so ... up to you

RedRec · 21/04/2022 19:17

It's the most mumsnet name ever. Female equivalent is Ottilie.

LowbrowVictoriana · 21/04/2022 19:19

I love it. Straightforward but stylish.

Same here

I don't love it as a full name and also don't love anything it's short for. Though it's rapidly risen to moderate popularity as standalone name recently.

Am I right in thinking Wayne Rooney used it?

DailyMailcanfuckthefuckoff · 21/04/2022 20:03

Lovely if you're birthing a baby rabbit, and/or appropriate if given as a nickname for something like Christopher.

If using it as a given name, then one day Kit's going to be 42 and cringing at his work email address; [email protected].

LondonQueen · 21/04/2022 20:07

Middle name Kat?

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 21/04/2022 20:14

I love that it was a properly MN approved (terribly middle class) name and then Wayne and Colleen Rooney used it for their son, no doubt giving some of the parents of Kits a bit of a palpitation.

I think it's nice enough.

pinklavenders · 21/04/2022 23:13

Kit looks like it's short for Kitten or Kitty 🐈‍⬛

And "take your kit off"..Shock

Luredbyapomegranate · 22/04/2022 08:50

Short for Christoper or Katherine great. But too nick namey on its own.

Iceddecaflatte · 22/04/2022 09:55

Sorry but I don't like it. It's a bit daft... too nick namey and suits better to a cat than a human. You can't have a cv which says Kit as a first name, it's a recipe for disaster and sorry for being discriminative.

Also, she/he will get teased with Kit Kat !

littleburn · 22/04/2022 12:18

I like it - always makes me think of Christopher/Kit Marlowe, but I'd put Christopher on the birth certificate.

Firebird83 · 22/04/2022 12:21

Agree that it’s nice short for Christopher or Katherine.

TweetTweetMF · 22/04/2022 12:22

No. It's not really a name it's a nickname

WhereWasThatFrom · 22/04/2022 13:20

I love it and think it's a great name.

pinklavenders · 22/04/2022 13:20

Sports Kit? Football Kit?
Kitty? Kitten?

I really don't like it as a boys/girls name, although I do know a Kitty.

Christopher is lovely shortened to Chris if necessary.

Aquamarine1029 · 22/04/2022 13:22

Wet and daft as a proper name, especially for a grown man.

Mochudubh · 22/04/2022 13:24

I would put Christopher/Katharine on the birth certificate and use Kit in day-to-day life. As pps have said, it gives the child more options as they grow up.

pinklavenders · 22/04/2022 15:29

I can see how Katherine/Kat/Kitty might lead to Kit as a nickname.

But from Christopher to Kit? Confused

it's a long standing shortening of Christopher. Playwright Christopher Marlowe was known as Kit way back in the 15-somethings.

This.
