What do you all think of Kit as a name?

Lots of yes, lots of no.

Can't use Christopher as full name as it's FILs name

Keaton
Kenneth
Kingston

Any name starting with K could shorten to Kit. Kitten Wink?

Daffodilsdance · 25/04/2022 20:07

I like it as a stand alone name . My ds is called Christopher ( nn Chris .) Kit has never seemed a natural shortening , yet I love it as an individual name for other children if that makes sense ? Even though ds is Christopher on how birth certificate, I would have Kit in his birth certificate if that’s what I wanted to call him .

DisforDarkChocolate · 25/04/2022 20:19

I absolutely love it. I would have used it but it doesn't go with my surname.

Whiskeypowers · 25/04/2022 22:10

My eldest son is Kit
he loves his name and it really suits him.

headspin10 · 25/04/2022 22:25

We have a daughter called Kitty who gets called Kit a lot. I wasn't keen at first but now I love it. Other names include Kit Kat and Kitten.

Timeforausernamechange22 · 25/04/2022 22:27

I love Kit for a boy. Makes me think of Kit Harrington or the Prince from Cinderella (the live version) as he was Kit.

caringcarer · 26/04/2022 00:14

My son is Christopher. At times in his life he was known as Christy, Kit now just Chris. Give him Christopher gives him options.

newnamenellie · 09/05/2022 12:52

Love it!

Don't get the people who say it's a nickname for a more traditional/boring name. Also don't get the concern about the it not being an 'adult name' - nonsense.

I have a Kitty and definitely didn't want her to be a Catherine or Kaitlin or whatever else it could be short for.

Lovely if you're birthing a baby rabbit, and/or appropriate if given as a nickname for something like Christopher.

If using it as a given name, then one day Kit's going to be 42 and cringing at his work email address; [email protected].

I’m sure Kit Harrington isn’t cringing at his name 😂

pinklavenders · 09/05/2022 14:33

Kit? As in take your kit off?!

Sports kit?

Kitten 🐈‍⬛?

Nooo, it's not a cool name for a boy/man!!

pinklavenders · 09/05/2022 14:34

I have a Kitty and definitely didn't want her to be a Catherine or Kaitlin or whatever else it could be short for.

But it's not about you, but your dd. She may prefer the poof a more adult name?

CambsAlways · 09/05/2022 14:35

Love it isn’t it one of Rooneys childrens names

timestheyarechanging · 09/05/2022 14:39

My friend has a Kit, aged 16 and lovely. Never had any abuse about his name. I like it.

AlwaysLatte · 09/05/2022 14:41

It's lovely, I was really tempted up use it myself but was put off by the inevitable dropping of the T by some people.

midsomermurderess · 09/05/2022 14:52

It’s a very old abbreviation for Christopher. It’s in no way equivalent to the recent appearance in UK lists of Ottilie.

Cindie943811A · 09/05/2022 14:58

I know a Kit — short for Christopher but no-one ever calls him anything but Kit . He’s in law and judges and court officials and other professionals as well as friends and family call him Kit. His father was an academic and Kit Marlowe was an influence.
Good strong no nonsense name and chocolate bars are never referred to.

notreadyforthisgelatinousbooty · 18/05/2022 09:14

I don't like it, personally... It just makes me think of the word. E.g. P.E. kit, first aid kit. "Kit, remember to bring your P.E. kit!" would be an odd sentence.

Perhaps mine is an unpopular opinion though, because it is a fairly popular name now, probably because of the Game of Thrones actor.

Pyjamagame · 18/05/2022 09:18

Adore the name, but would probably use Christopher on the birth certificate. Also a fan of 'Kip'.

pinklavenders · 18/05/2022 10:16

Sports Kit, PE Kit, take your Kit off.....
I'm not keen

Suppose it depends on how you use language, we don't really say Kit for any of those in our house.

It's usually clothes not Kit even if it was then our Kit will survive hearing Kit go get your P.E Kit.

But then both DH have unusual names DH more than me and no one has ever commented except that's an unusual name, we both have had a variety of jobs and never been treated differently because of our names.

I'd certainly hope not!!
