Boy name - Baz - thoughts?

We would love to pay tribute to someone who is no longer with us by naming our son after him. His name was Barry, but everybody called him Baz. Barry never liked his name, so we would never want to call our son Barry, but we are liking ‘Baz’ and makes us smile every time we think of it, but worried what everyone else might think!

Absolutely god awful.

Side note: baz is how 'balls' is pronounced by a lot of Scottish people...

sillyrubberduck · 09/04/2022 10:58

Maybe get a pet and call them Baz. Sebastian is a great name.

veronicagoldberg · 09/04/2022 12:34

I know a Sebastian nicknamed Baz.

NotNotNotMyName · 09/04/2022 12:36

Baz no way. Basil is a great name though.

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/04/2022 12:39

Middle names Woz 'Ere.

Livpool · 09/04/2022 13:09

Poor child - no. Make it a middle name?

Lilaclavenders · 09/04/2022 16:57

Baz is not nice.

Basil is a nice name

Padderbadger · 15/04/2022 02:46

Maybe Bastian? Baz is too much of a nickname for me on its own!

user1492757084 · 15/04/2022 03:04

I love Barry.
Barry is a distinguished, gentlemanly name that is well known but not too common. aka Baz, Bazza
Your friend was not harmed by his name, Barry, and if your child preferred Baz then he would be in good company too.

WholeHog · 15/04/2022 03:06

Barry/Baz can be short for Bartholomew too.

Amdone123 · 15/04/2022 03:06

I don't like Bastian.
Sebastian is beautiful but how you'd want to then have Baz, is beyond me !
The best idea is the combo.
Benjamin Alexander Zachary.

MrsMarkRonson · 15/04/2022 06:13

Baz sounds like a drug dealer sorry. Barry is of my parents generation.
Ben?

GADDay · 15/04/2022 06:24

Sebastian is often shortened to Baz in Australia.

Would that work?

Ihavehadenoughalready · 15/04/2022 06:51

Yeah, no.

interest12 · 15/04/2022 06:53

@DockOTheBay

I know a Bas, short for Sebastian. Much nicer than Bas IMO
This would be the only way. Please not Baz, Bazza, or even Basil which is utterly limp
bitchymcbitch · 15/04/2022 07:12

So the way to honour this special person who hated his name is to give your child this name?

I don't get it. I also don't like Baz. It's very dated.

MargaretRiver · 15/04/2022 07:33

Barack?

Obama was nicknamed Barry as a boy

17caterpillars1mouse · 15/04/2022 16:30

Sebastian maybe?

shreddednips · 15/04/2022 16:38

@Mysterian

Congratulations! It's a mechanic!
Brilliant comment 😆 please don't call your child Baz. Either use Sebastian as a first name and Baz as a nickname that he can drop if he wishes, or have Baz as a middle name if you must.
Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 15/04/2022 17:24

Poor kid will spend all his time explaining that baz isn’t short for anything

mrziggycoco · 15/04/2022 17:30

Well everyone else does not think the same thing so it's pointless worrying about that.

Etinoxaurus · 15/04/2022 17:50

🤔 pretty unanimous group think on this thread Wink

One of my husband's middle names is Barry, after his grandfather. It works well as a middle name but I wouldn't use it (or Baz) as a first name.
