Boy name - Baz - thoughts?

We would love to pay tribute to someone who is no longer with us by naming our son after him. His name was Barry, but everybody called him Baz. Barry never liked his name, so we would never want to call our son Barry, but we are liking ‘Baz’ and makes us smile every time we think of it, but worried what everyone else might think!

Your friend hated his name. Don't lumber your child with a name they'll also hate.

I went out with a Barry once, he hated Barry, Baz and all the various alternates.

It's a very dated, niche name.

Gowithme · 07/04/2022 21:31

No one could take someone called 'Baz' seriously surely, Sebastian is a good compromise with Baz as nn.

midsomermurderess · 07/04/2022 21:31

The Finbar suggestion is good as a formal fist name, strangely cool too.

ArticSaviour · 07/04/2022 21:36

@AwkwardPaws27

Baz could be short for Balonz? Grin
😂😂😂
Obelisk · 07/04/2022 21:41

Finbar Saunders

Tee20x · 07/04/2022 21:47

Awful!!!! Don't do it

Electrox · 07/04/2022 21:51

Surely Baz, Gaz and Daz have been pushed into room 101 for a reason.

My thoughts exactly. Along with Shaz and Kaz.

WeasilyPleased · 07/04/2022 22:29

I like a pp suggestion of initials so for example
Benjamin Alex Zachary or
Billy Albert Zayne.

seven201 · 07/04/2022 22:41

To me Baz = Barry and Barry = Eastenders.

Luredbyapomegranate · 07/04/2022 23:28

I imagine they’ll think you’re pretty awful parents.

Your child isn’t a walking memorial stone for someone they’ll never know. They aren’t a pet either - giving them a name that ‘makes you smile’ shouldn’t be your priority. You are giving your child a name they will carry for life.

Middle names are how you pay tribute to people so use it there.

NewandNotImproved · 08/04/2022 17:25

Sebastian or Basil. Or a name of his own that’s not a monument to his parents friend.

FASDE1517 · 08/04/2022 17:32

Sebastian maybe. Or Barney. Or Beau Arthur Zachary (or any other initial combo!) But definitely not just Baz!

Mysterian · 08/04/2022 17:36

Congratulations! It's a mechanic!

whatausername · 08/04/2022 17:45

GlacindaTheTroll · 08/04/2022 19:39

@Obelisk

Finbar Saunders
Precisely !!
pinksquash13 · 08/04/2022 22:31

I think of Basildon (the not very nice Essex town). There's a place called Baz Vegas which doesn't have good connotations. I like Basil.

dustydriver · 08/04/2022 22:41

@Obelisk

Finbar Saunders
or biffa bacon's mate
RussianSpy101 · 08/04/2022 22:43

@emmathedilemma has nailed the description of baz!
He probably also has a bulldog tattoo on his arm along with mum and dad tattooed on each hand

Yoloohno · 08/04/2022 22:53

Please think about naming after a relative, my ds hated his family inspired middle name for years and that’s is a classic name of centuries including kings.

chubbachub · 08/04/2022 22:59

@PukkaP

It’s not a great name to be honest. I wouldn’t do it. Maybe you could find three first names you like with the initials B, A and Z?
I agree with this.

Not just Baz.

chubbachub · 08/04/2022 23:02

@emmathedilemma

Baz is a middle aged man with a beer belly who is only ever seen wearing an England football top and most likely to be found in the local pub most evenings. His idea of exercise is playing darts once a week.
Loves a curry and a punt on the horses, too.
Snoopsnoggysnog · 08/04/2022 23:20

I was coming on to say Balonz too Grin

However Sebastian is lovely.

I used to work with someone who has been in the news a lot lately, not for good reasons. His nickname was Baz and his actual name was completely different. It’s not a good association for me.

MissNothing1991 · 08/04/2022 23:22

I know of a Sebastian who was known as Baz if that's of any help

Viviennemary · 08/04/2022 23:25

Its like a name from an old Beano or Dandy comic. Awful.

thegreylady · 09/04/2022 10:42

Sebastian is a lovely name.
