Boy name - Baz - thoughts?

We would love to pay tribute to someone who is no longer with us by naming our son after him. His name was Barry, but everybody called him Baz. Barry never liked his name, so we would never want to call our son Barry, but we are liking ‘Baz’ and makes us smile every time we think of it, but worried what everyone else might think!

I don't like it personally. It seems both informal and dated to me. If it has strong meaning for your family, I would suggest using it as a middle name and picking a different first name.

I would say Sebastian, nn ‘Baz’ or ‘Bas’

I agree. Not nice on its own and Barry is too old. But it's lovely as a nn for Sebastian.

Theres a Baz at DSs school, hes really called Sebastian. Bas and Baz are common nicknames for Sebastian as well as Seb. Dont put Baz on the birth certificate. Find a long name you like. Give him options as an adult.

Honestly I can't understand why you would care about what anyone else thinks if u both like it. Why would anonymous strangers opinions matter to you? Baz makes u smile. That would be enough for me.....

im going to be the odd one out and say i like it baz to me is automatically short for barry .i wouldn't assume it was anything but tbh. its not outlandish or weird in any way. i expect loads of Barry's are called baz for short

Anyway, I digress, please don't call your child Baz. Sebastian with the nickname Baz would be ok.

I like Bas or Baz short for Sebastian. Not Baz on its own.

Baz is a middle aged man with a beer belly who is only ever seen wearing an England football top and most likely to be found in the local pub most evenings. His idea of exercise is playing darts once a week.

This is a good idea. As you say Barry didnt like his name so maybe baby Bas might not like the Bas, go Sebastian.

Why do you smile? Is it because of the actual name or because you are remembering the person and smiling at him? This child will be his own person, he won't be "Baz" so it has to be the name you are smiling at rather than the memory.

Personally, I think it's not a great choice as an actual name.

This is not a good idea - it wasn't a great name in the 70s and it's not got better with age.

Yes! So cool! Bas is a common name in the Netherlands and I know one, so this feels totally normal to me. The next generation will have plenty of similar names so Baz wont stand out at all
