Arcadia for a girl? Nn Cady

Honest opinions needed as I’m full of the preggo hormones and don’t know if it’s lovely and unusual or verging on the ridiculous!

OH says he will consider it— our surname is two syllables and quite common— We loved Aurelia previously but because of a certain partying politician it’s off the table.

Is it a step too far?

I prefer Cadence for the nickname Cady.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 20/02/2022 16:34

It's the hormones talking, give it a wide berth Grin

sayanythingelse · 20/02/2022 16:35

It just reminds me of the now defunct company that used to own Topshop, Debenhams, Dorothy Perkins etc.

TrashyPanda · 20/02/2022 16:36

How would you pronounce them?

Ar-cah-dia or Ar-Kay-dia?

Cady as in tea caddy or Kay-Dee?

DaffodilDandilion · 20/02/2022 16:36

Philip Green

DameCelia · 20/02/2022 16:36

The name is lovely but I'm confused that you think you'll give a nickname as well?
Is this a new thing?
In my experience (old gimmer) nicknames evolve, the only possible influence you might have is insisting that a particular nickname can't be used, Fifi for Fiona being a cracking example!, But even then you might not get to dictate.

lucylucyapplejuicy · 20/02/2022 16:37

I think it sounds awful to be honest I prefer just Cady. Aurelia is beautiful

LimeSupper · 20/02/2022 16:38

I don’t mind Arcadia actually but Aurelia is far nicer.

MonkeyPuddle · 20/02/2022 16:38

Yeah reminds me of Arcadia Group and Phillip Green being a massive, massive arsehole.

giggly · 20/02/2022 16:38

I’d think why just why.

VariationsonaTheme · 20/02/2022 16:39

No, it’s the name of a garden centre near me.

BertieBotts · 20/02/2022 16:39

Isn't it a chain of shops??

Suzi888 · 20/02/2022 16:39

@DaffodilDandilion

Philip Green
I knew it sounded familiar
TarcasticSwat · 20/02/2022 16:39

Aurelia and Arcadia are both pretty awful...sorry OP.

BobMortimersTrout · 20/02/2022 16:40

Am I being thick? What's the link between Aurelia and Boris Johnson? (and yes I have already tried googling)

Arcadia - Philip Green. Don't do it.
Aurelia - beautiful name.

waterlego · 20/02/2022 16:44

Is the reference to a partying politician actually about Allegra Stratton? Or is there an Aurelia I don’t know about.

Sorry OP, I don’t like Arcadia. It sounds like a low budget cruise ship to me.

Weefreetiffany · 20/02/2022 16:44

Haha well I hadn’t considered the Philip green angle. That definitely gives a yuck factor…

Cady is the nickname I would use, obviously other people can use what they feel comfortable with. Cady pronounced “cay” like “say” and “dy” like “see”

I thought Boris called his latest daughter Aurelia? Would be so happy to learn otherwise though!

MintyGreenDream · 20/02/2022 16:48

Sounds like an amusements at Mablethorpe

poppyrock · 20/02/2022 16:48

Boris called his latest daughter Romy, OP.

LimeSupper · 20/02/2022 16:48

I thought it was baby Romy?

astoundedgoat · 20/02/2022 16:48

It's kind of pretty, but I don't like Cady at ALL. When I read Arcadia I think "et in Arcadia ego" (ex Classicist!) or the Arcadia Group and pension fund embezzlement, depending on my humour.

What about Antigone (an-TIG-oh-nee)? If you want a nn for her it could be Tig or Tiggy. It's got that ancient classics vibe you're going for but is a bit more cool?

Fivebeanchilli · 20/02/2022 16:49

He called her Romy I think.
Arcadia is pretty awful imo - even without the Philip Green thing, it just sounds like an arcade!

Notanotherwindow · 20/02/2022 16:52

Aurelia is much better. Arcadia is a shop isn't it? Or a pokemon.

Not sure about Antigone... sounds like an antibiotic.

Weefreetiffany · 20/02/2022 16:54

@poppyrock and @LimeSupper oh you’re right! I’m going to blame this one on the hormones too Blush looks like Aurelia is back in the running

@astoundedgoat I was hoping for more classics/lit/musical associations but it seems like it’s giving the opposite idea to everyone else. Sadly! I like your suggestion but it also gives me a-level nightmare flashbacks, sorry but thanks!

Much prefer Aurelia.

I do like Cady though.
