Second baby girl due in next few weeks and still havent decided on a name!

Please help me decide. Our surname starts with F and my first daughters name starts with F.

So far on the list we have,

Fern
Liv
Neve
Betsy
Edie

Is there any of these that are not nice/have negative connotations/bad nicknames?!

Thanks for your help xx

Fern is really lovely.

LethargicActress · 08/01/2022 19:33

How do you say Edie?

Jacaranda75 · 08/01/2022 19:34

I don’t think Neve is spelt like that.

Anoisagusaris · 08/01/2022 19:34

I love Edie.

How would you pronounce Neve? Nev or Neeve?

PartySuziPlease · 08/01/2022 19:35

Thank you, chunkymenrock! Edie is pronounced like eedee. My gran was Edith that's why I like it. I love Liv too but feel everyone with assume it's short for Olivia?

Anoisagusaris · 08/01/2022 19:36

If it’s Neeve, why not just use the Irish Niamh? Is Neeve even a name?

PartySuziPlease · 08/01/2022 19:36

You can spell it Niamh, neave or Neve, I prefer it as Neve. Pronounced as neeve.

@Anoisagusaris I was just drafting a response with the spelling you reference!

FindingMeno · 08/01/2022 19:37

I like them all but Fern makes me jump to Fern McCann, and the spelling of Neve doesn't seem right.
Love Liv and wouldn't necessarily think Olivia.
Betsy and Edie are my favourites.

wizzler · 08/01/2022 19:38

Prefer Fern and Edie
Have you thought about Phoebe?

passmetheginpls · 08/01/2022 19:38

I wouldn't like to be called Betsy or Edie as my full name I don't think, but the others are lovely names (as would be Elizabeth/Beth/Bethany nn Betsy and Edith nn Edie). Fern maybe a bit harsh sounding/ a bit matchy if your older DD name is Faye or Fia?
Otherwise lovely choices Smile

FayCarew · 08/01/2022 19:39

Fern - ok. Best spelling. I don't like Ferne and Fearne
Liv - nice but may be assumed to be short for Olivia or Livia
Neve - so many Niamhs, Eve, Evie, Eva, Avas arounf
Betsy - swet
Edie - erectile dysfunction or eating disorder

loobylou44 · 08/01/2022 19:39

Neve is definitely a spelling of Niamh. I actually prefer it as it sounds like it looks.

Out of your list I like Fern the best.

If I saw Liv I would definitely assume it was short for Olivia.

Betsy and Edie are nice names but they make me think of a certain instagram account and that puts me off them.

ISmellBurnings · 08/01/2022 19:39

Love Edie. Can’t stand Betsy, too twee.

Liv just feels like you’ve forgotten to add the rest of the name.

Hoowhoowho · 08/01/2022 19:40

Fern is lovely, getting more popular if that bothers you but I think say Felicity and Fern Frost do go well as siblings

Liv as a stand-alone name Id pronounce as Leeve. Is that how you want it said?

Neve, I don’t like the anglicised spelling and would go for Niamh

Betsy is nice even if it is a short form but possibly a bit little girly for an adult

Edie is a definite short form and I’d only use if Edith/Eden etc

My favourite is definitely Fern.

passmetheginpls · 08/01/2022 19:40

I think Liv is a great, strong name actually! Much better than Olivia

MrsBertBibby · 08/01/2022 19:41

I'd use Edith. Beautiful name.

Frenchfurze · 08/01/2022 19:42

Liv is nicest.

Anglicised versions of Niamh are awful.

PartySuziPlease · 08/01/2022 19:45

This is so helpful! Thank you, it's great to have lots of opinions to make my mind up.

Findingmeno- my husband feels the same as you about Fern/ferne mccann

Wizzler- my first daughter is Phoebe!! 😅, just felt it was easier to post her initial sound. I absolutely loved her name from v early on so feel a bit guilty this time that nothing is jumping out as a favourite

I love Betsy, Edie and Liv. All three sound lovely with Phoebe too. I've heard of and like the short name Via for Olivia instead of Liv - do you like it?
Fern is nice.
I really, really don't like the Neve spelling for Niamh, I would read that as Nev.

DotDotDotDotDot · 08/01/2022 19:53

Fern is my favourite by a mile from your list. This is the best spelling of it. It reminds me of the little girl from Charlottes Web, so lovely.
If you’re looking for suggestions maybe Eliza, Lois or Imogen?

MaryChristmouse · 08/01/2022 19:54

Love Liv.

Edie is really nice too.

The only one I don't like is Betsy - too cutesy for my taste!

Anoisagusaris · 08/01/2022 19:55

@loobylou44

Neve is definitely a spelling of Niamh. I actually prefer it as it sounds like it looks.

Niamh sound like it looks, in Irish as it’s an Irish name. Neeve or neve are just anglicised versions of it.
fullofpips · 08/01/2022 19:55

Love Fern. Liv feels incomplete. Spelling of Neve feels a bit off but it's a nice name. Don't like Betsy, feels really 'try hard' and just too much. Edie is nice but would go with Edith and nn Edie Smile

Justkeeppedaling · 08/01/2022 19:57

Fern - best of your options
Liv - awful. Olivia is NHS bad enough, Liv is dreadful
Neve - nicer as Niamh
Betsy - no
Edie - I prefer Edith
