For a boy... thoughts? There were 5 in 2020. I like it, but I'm not sure where you'd go with it nickname wise?

Oral-Ian? It's not good! Like Aurelius though.

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 04/01/2022 23:07

No! Not oral-ian!
Au- like autumn
Ray
Lee
An

Tinkletwat · 04/01/2022 23:10

Name of a very fine French rugby player (Google aurelien rougerie if you fancy some eye candy).

Bonnealle · 04/01/2022 23:11

Ray-Lee? Spelt phonetically obviously!

Yespresh · 04/01/2022 23:12

Sounds too Oral to me. Kids are brutal.

ISeeTheLight · 04/01/2022 23:12

"Aurelian" is not a name Confused
Aurélien or Aurelius are. Both a bit try hard imo - Aurélien maybe if you're French.

Tell that to the ancient Romans...
Bonnealle · 04/01/2022 23:59

Haha @EverNapping, exactly, who does @ISeeTheLight think built those walls 😂

Menmy3 · 05/01/2022 00:02

Not for me but all my kids have dull names🤣

FrecklesMalone · 05/01/2022 00:05

God it's a name that will have to be spelt slooooooowwllyyyy as people will get confused with all the vowels. I speak with bitter experience.

Linguini · 05/01/2022 00:07

Sounds like Orwellian.

LadyGAgain · 05/01/2022 00:15

Love it! Worked with Aurelien. Not Or, it's Au (like the start of ouch) Au-ray-Lee-an

AntiHop · 05/01/2022 00:28

Aurelia is a popular name, so I think his name would often be misheard.

DariaMorgendorffer · 05/01/2022 00:29

I love it.

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 05/01/2022 01:02

I know one...uses the nickname Rels

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 05/01/2022 01:57

I like it - nn Ozzie?

imnotacelebritygetmeoutofhere · 05/01/2022 02:52

It's a great name, I love it! I have an Aurelian neighbour who some goes by Ray for short.

Ladybird900 · 05/01/2022 04:06

It’s really nice but also really long and a bit “much”. Would be a fabulous middle name though!

Kanaloa · 05/01/2022 04:10

@IamnotwhouthinkIam

Aurelian is lovely, I wish I was brave enough to use it! - obvious nn's would be Aurie or Ray to me, both very nice. I like Aurelius too but I suppose the "an" ending fits in better with all the more popular "n" ending boys names (Ethan, Roman, Logan, Sebastian etc).
I see this phrase a lot but I suppose it’s not really you who needs to be brave. You’re not the one who needs to introduce yourself as Aurelian at the local comp.

Honestly I think this is a very big name. One of those interesting and cool middle names but needs a big personality to pull off as a first name. Like it would be cool if you were a very cool, of the moment, sensitive actor (sort of Timothée Chalamet type) and not so cool if you were a very shy and reserved year 8 with a bad fringe who dreams of being an accountant (sort of Marcus from about a boy type).

It's most definitely a rather normal name in Romania. And possibly other Eastern European countries? Donno.

Pronounced Ah-oo-reh-lee-un, quite different from the French version.

Not my favourite, but definitely usable.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 05/01/2022 07:15

Sounds like a Scottish person talking about their alien.

Only joking - I actually like it!

toastofthetown · 05/01/2022 08:58

I really like Aurelian. The only intuitive nicknames are Ray and Ian, though others mentioned above could work.

It’s a big name, but I don’t think too out there to use. I would use a more conventional middle name though, in case he wants to switch to that. The problems with deciding which names are usable or not is that the person you are giving the name to can’t let you know what they think until too far down the line. Aurelian might wish his name were Oliver, while Oliver might resent his ‘boring, overpopular’ name and want something more different. If you’re unsure then might be worth your husband roadtesting it for a while. Introduce himself as Aurelian, get a drink at Stabucks and see how that goes.

PlainJane1000 · 05/01/2022 09:50

I personally think they will spend their life being Ray or whatever shortened version is decided on, so the question is rather, do you want a son called Ray / Ian etc who occasionally mentions that his full name is actually Aurelian?

itwasntaparty · 05/01/2022 11:11

Aurelius?

Pemba · 05/01/2022 11:28

I wasn't really aware of the name before, and I hate to say it, but it does sound a bit pretentious. Like a fairy king in a pantomime, or something from a legend or 'Lord of the Rings'. Not for a real child.
