Mariana?

This name is on my list, as an honor name to someone who pronounces it like "Marry-Anna". I adore this pronunciation and also this spelling.

I have seen that some people would pronounce this "Marry-arna" which I don´t especially like.

(Just a thought: I also pronounce Ariana like "Arry-Anna" - do some people say "Arry-arna?"

You need to spell it with a double n if you want it to be pronounced Anna. Ana is usually pronounced arna.

Synchrony · 14/11/2021 16:46

@521Jeanie

In my world: Mariana would be marry-arna Marianna would be marry-anna
This
Disfordarkchocolate · 14/11/2021 16:50

I'd say it the same way as you. Lovely name.

IHateCoronavirus · 14/11/2021 16:57

A double consonant after the vowel sound shortens the vowel to /a/ rather than the long vowel sound of /ar/ or /ah/.
So ana is pronounced arna/ahna and Anna is Anna

50ShadesOfCatholic · 14/11/2021 16:59

You can pronounce it as you wish. The. Mariana I know pronounces it Marry Arna.

(my son pronounces it marijuana!)

The Liana I know pronounces it Lee Anna.

Etonmessisyum · 14/11/2021 17:02

I’d pronounce it marry anna there’s no r in it so not sure where that comes into it. Same with Ariana I pronounce it ari anna.

Pretty names, I have a northern Scottish accent although mim is English so do pronounce some words/names differently than friends. Perhaps just add the extra N? If it’s an issue with some people’s pronunciation.

mibbelucieachwell · 14/11/2021 17:09

I'd be confused about how to pronounce it. I'd wonder whether it was intended to sound the same as Marianna ie MarryAnna or to be pronounced Marry Ayna because of the single n.

ilovemykids5 · 14/11/2021 17:10

Marry ah na

zafferana · 14/11/2021 17:13

If you want it to be pronounced Marry-anna I would spell it Marianna, as other posters have suggested.

The Mariana Trench (the deepest ocean trench on Earth), is pron. marry-arna (which is the American pronunciation - Anna being Arna in the US).

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 14/11/2021 17:15

With one n in the name, most people will pronounce it Mari-ahna.

I’d also pronounce it Ari-ahna.

But it doesn’t matter how people think it should be pronounced, if they pronounce it ‘wrong’, you correct them, and they pronounce it correctly thereafter.

DD has a name which can be pronounced three ways, so of course some people get it ‘wrong’ when they first pronounce it. Once they know her pronunciation, they don’t make the mistake again.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 14/11/2021 17:16

And yes, I think the Mariana Trench will mean most people do default to Mari-ahna.

SleepingStandingUp · 14/11/2021 17:17

Marry Arna, Midlands.

I'd spell it Marrianna

Howshouldibehave · 14/11/2021 17:21

As a lot of others have said, I’d pronounce it Marry Arna.

If you added another n, it would be Marry Anna.

LoveGrooveDanceParty · 14/11/2021 17:31

As a PP has said - for all the people with rhotic accents getting confused by the inclusion of the ‘r’, when people with non-rhotic accents pronounce ‘ar’, it sounds like ‘ah’.

So ‘Ana’, ‘ah-na’ and ‘arna’ all sound the same.

LizzieAnt · 14/11/2021 17:39

How much of a problem the pronunciation will be depends on where you live OP.
For what it's worth I say Mariana and Marianna exactly the same (with anna at the end). Likewise the Mariana Trench. I'm in Ireland.

LizzieAnt · 14/11/2021 17:45

@LoveGrooveDanceParty

Except they don't...I know the sound you mean by Ar-na, and ah-na sounds different (at least to me with my rhotic accent). More confusion Grin Thanks though.
Luredbyapomegranate · 14/11/2021 18:28

Marry-anna

I think most people would in the UK, esp as Marianne is getting more popular right now.

If you want the US Marry-Arna pronunciation it's going to be a bit of a lifetime of corrections for her.. so I'd pick something else. Not sure using one n would help a whole bunch..

Scotinoz · 14/11/2021 18:53

I’d say marry-anna. There’s no r!!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/11/2021 18:55

@521Jeanie

In my world: Mariana would be marry-arna Marianna would be marry-anna
this.
YukoandHiro · 14/11/2021 18:56

Ma-ree-ah-nah

YukoandHiro · 14/11/2021 18:56

You need two n's to make it marry-Anna

JachFrost · 14/11/2021 18:56

@521Jeanie

In my world: Mariana would be marry-arna Marianna would be marry-anna
Likewise. I'm SE England
riotlady · 14/11/2021 19:15

Marry-Anna here but I agree spelling it Marianna would reduce confusion

KittenKong · 14/11/2021 19:16

Ma-ri-ana

Or like the song - ma-reee-an-ahhhhh

GreenLunchBox · 14/11/2021 19:17

Marry Arna

Arry Arna

As PP said, you'd have to spell it Marianna for people to unanimously pronounce it your way
