How would you pronounce

Mariana?

This name is on my list, as an honor name to someone who pronounces it like "Marry-Anna". I adore this pronunciation and also this spelling.

I have seen that some people would pronounce this "Marry-arna" which I don´t especially like.

(Just a thought: I also pronounce Ariana like "Arry-Anna" - do some people say "Arry-arna?"

@stingofthebutterfly

You need to spell it with a double n if you want it to be pronounced Anna. Ana is usually pronounced arna.
Yep, like 'banana'
Nancydrawn · 14/11/2021 19:20

With one n, it's Mar-ee-AH-nah. I've heard some Mary-AH-nah, which is also fine.

2pinkginsplease · 14/11/2021 19:21

marry Anna

Not sure why some people are adding an R into it as it doesn’t have an R!

WaitinginVain · 14/11/2021 19:43

Marry-arna. Midlands here.

Like alrightfella says, Marry-anna if the Marianna spelling.

Howshouldibehave · 14/11/2021 19:46

@2pinkginsplease

marry Anna

I would say path like ‘parth’ and bath like ‘Barth’ but they don’t have an r in! That’s kind of how accents work.
Emmelina · 14/11/2021 20:09

Marry-ah-na.

cherrypie66 · 14/11/2021 21:55

It needs to be maryanna for the way you want it pronounced I read it as Maryarna

DramaAlpaca · 14/11/2021 23:06

Marry Anna, like you want it OP. Gorgeous name.

tabulahrasa · 14/11/2021 23:18

Marry-ah-na like the trench...

GalaxyPostcard · 14/11/2021 23:19

Marry-arna if spelt with one n, marry-anna if spelt with two.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 15/11/2021 08:26

I'm Scottish, so very much in the Marry Anna camp.

However, as others have pointed out, it may be better to use two n's to avoid confusion as others pronounce it differently.

EdgeOfTheSky · 15/11/2021 08:49

Marry-arna
Arry-arna

TuftyMarmoset · 15/11/2021 08:58

I would say marry-arna like the trench. For marry-Anna you’d need to spell it Marianna I think.

Scarby9 · 15/11/2021 09:01

I have just suggested Mariana on the nice but underused names list. Love it.
I pronounce it Marry Anna.
But you could double the n to ensure that pronunciation.

LizzieAnt · 15/11/2021 12:05

@LizzieAnt

How much of a problem the pronunciation will be depends on where you live OP. For what it's worth I say Mariana and Marianna exactly the same (with anna at the end). Likewise the Mariana Trench. I'm in Ireland.
Actually, I've been thinking about this a bit more and I think I was wrong before...I don't pronounce them exactly the same. Mariana is a bit more Marry-ah-na, but Ah-na is not the same as Ar-na in my accent, and the difference between Mariana and Marianna (Marry-an-na) is subtle, to my ear at least.

Ah, to me, is the ah sound in Bah-humbug as pronounced by these Americans in the link below. I don't think it's the sound most people mean when they say Marry-arna. Or is it?

LizzieAnt · 15/11/2021 12:12

Very much open to correction btw, I could easily have this all wrong Smile

TrashyPanda · 15/11/2021 12:19

Marry Anna, like the trench

TuftyMarmoset · 15/11/2021 12:24

@LizzieAnt the first pronouncation of bah is sort of like it but not the second. Like this m.youtube.com/watch?v=uCq0kzqKIuU

notangelinajolie · 15/11/2021 12:28

1 n Mari arna
2 n's Mari anna

HBGKC · 15/11/2021 12:30

Marry-Arna

(Also Ari-Arna)

tabulahrasa · 15/11/2021 12:40

“Ah, to me, is the ah sound in Bah-humbug as pronounced by these Americans in the link below. I don't think it's the sound most people mean when they say Marry-arna. Or is it?”

There was a thread not long ago that went on about that ar... and it turns out people adding an r do not In fact have an Essex like accent where they do add rs to words, they just mean a long a Confused

steppemum · 15/11/2021 12:47

yes, I would say arna in both names.

BUT when you meet someone, and they say their name is Mariana, then you copy their pronunciation.

I know 2 Talias, and one uses a long a and one uses a short a. I call them by what they told me their name is.

And Maya - about half of the ones I know say May-a (like month of may) and the other half say my-a

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 15/11/2021 12:49

Marry-Anna

LizzieAnt · 15/11/2021 12:52

Thanks Tabulahrasa. I do know people aren't adding r's, that they're just describing the sounds they make when speaking with a non-rhotic accent. It did confuse me at first, but I understand that now.

I suppose I'm not clear what sound people mean when they say 'ar ' though. A pp mentioned it was the same as 'ah', but I think people say this differently in different accents too. Thanks for the link TuftyMarmoset. I say Mariana like that. But is the sound used in that clip the same sound people mean when they write 'ar'? The 'ar' in car sounds different (to me) when said by many of the British speakers in this link for example...

Or maybe I'm hearing things at this stage Grin
