Love the name Frida for a baby girl, but is it too out there? Thinking Frida Kahlo whose art i love...

It is very much one of those names that is 'coming around again' and reinventing itself. It feels like two names ifswim.
Freda, as in great aunty Freda, with a headscarf and fag and now Frida, cool, willowy and scandi.

I always thought Emily in its popular days was like this. Emily Bishop on Corrie was a very different Emily to the little girls I have taught over the last 10 years.

I like it. People say its frumpy but it's not, it's much better than names like ada or Edith.

TatianaBis · 27/10/2021 16:13

I’ve always thought it was a ugly name, quite suiting to a cow.

DramaAlpaca · 27/10/2021 19:00

It's a very marmite name, isn't it?

@TatianaBis you're thinking of a Friesian. Frida the Friesian Grin

I like names with a Scandi feel, but the problem with Frida is it has the same pronunciation as Freda, which is super frumpy, and I can't get away from that.

I'm not fond of Etta either, it looks incomplete to me like it should be short for Henrietta or Julietta. I don't like it as a standalone name.

MerryMarigold · 27/10/2021 19:03

Another Frida fan (have you read The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver?).

HoldingTheDoor · 27/10/2021 19:04

It isn't "crazy" but it is a rather frumpy and ugly name.

toomuchlaundry · 27/10/2021 19:11

I thought of Victoria Wood, but I am of a certain age, so many other people might not!

TatianaBis · 27/10/2021 19:19

Indeed I am thinking of Friesians.

Frida, Freda, Frieda - however it is spelt is all equally frumpy.

Moo.

Boudiccasback · 27/10/2021 19:25

Sounds very clunky

mathanxiety · 27/10/2021 19:35

Frida could be short for Elfrieda too.

But I prefer Frida.

Gherkingreen · 27/10/2021 19:40

It's beautiful. Elegant, artsy, chic, unusual but not crazy.
A woman on a recent Grand Designs was called Fritha, which has Scandinavian roots. Both gorgeous names.

GuidingSpirit · 27/10/2021 19:45

@TatianaBis, @DramaAlpaca I wanted to name my DD Freida after a lovely family member but DH vetoed it on the basis of it being too similar to friesian 🙄

Newpuppymummy · 27/10/2021 19:45

I think Charlotte Church’s little girl is called Frida. I think it’s a cute name

Tenfifteen · 27/10/2021 19:48

Think it’s great and wouldn’t find it at all out there. More used to the “Frieda” spelling but both are good. But Etta is lovely too. Decisions decisions! But I don’t think you’ll go wrong 😊

AlwaysLatte · 27/10/2021 19:49

It's lovely but just think of a lifetime of spelling corrections...

mathanxiety · 27/10/2021 19:51

What spelling corrections?

Holly60 · 27/10/2021 19:51

Lovely name! Go for it

SamMil · 27/10/2021 19:54

I think it's definitely having a comeback. I know a toddler Freda and love the name!

AlwaysLatte · 27/10/2021 22:31

What spelling corrections?
Having to say it's not Freda.

MeredithGreyishblue · 27/10/2021 22:33

@AlwaysLatte

What spelling corrections? Having to say it's not Freda.
Plenty Clares and Kathryns have survived that.
LaceySleeve · 27/10/2021 22:35

It's a no from me. Looks like Frida(y) written down.

Hopeisallineed · 27/10/2021 23:03

I know a Friday too, that’s quite a common name in some cultures.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/10/2021 23:07

I prefer Agneta. ..I'm another Abba fan.

mathanxiety · 27/10/2021 23:27

What spelling corrections?
Having to say it's not Freda.

This doesn't strike me as a major problem.

MysteriousMonkey · 27/10/2021 23:30

One of my children has a friend called Frida and she is utterly lovely Grin
