Maci is the only name my husband likes and we’re pretty set on it. His family love the name, but my family are not keen.

Would love to know general thoughts!

Thank you in advance.

@brewstew Ah yes! I hadn’t thought about the spelling being perceived differently based on being Wales/England based!

I read it as Macky as well which isn’t great

WeasilyPleased · 24/09/2021 23:33

I don't mind Maci but I prefer Mabli which is what I may be calling my bump. It means beloved.

tickledtiger · 24/09/2021 23:44

Not my style but it’s easy to pronounce and has good nickname potential!

Kanaloa · 25/09/2021 01:28

I like Macy, don’t see any need to change the spelling as it’s fine how it is.

Tulips15 · 25/09/2021 01:35

My DN is Macie.
I love it!

AnnieSnap · 25/09/2021 01:38

I really don’t like it.

RonaldMcDonald · 25/09/2021 01:45

Mac- ee
Like Mac-ee-D’s

Nice, I like it. Born under the golden M

Mamainthemaking · 25/09/2021 08:58

Maci was the way I have seen it spelt, I didn’t change it. E.g. Maci Bookout but I totally get that it seems to be confusing people.

Thank you @Tulips15 it’s good to hear first hand experiences of the name. Smile

I can't get my head around people thinking that Maci could possibly be pronounced 'mack-ee'. It seems very obvious to me that it should be pronounced May-see.

I've got to say that I don't LOVE it, but it isn't awful! Although it looks a bit incomplete, and it is lacking something. It doesn't have much history or background, and it doesn't have any nickname options. But it's pretty!

I think the problem is that it's so close to Lacey/Kacie/Lexi - names which seem to be really overdone and also considered a bit chavvy. So it might seem sort of chavvy by association to some people.

I do think that there are better names out there. If you like short and pretty names, could you try something a bit stronger/more substantial/with a bit of history and less made up? How about something like:
Juno
Alba
Celie
Zelie
Lux
Fiadh
Liv
Alma
Tess
Noa

@Balonzette, OP is in Wales. C is always pronounced like K in Welsh.
A welsh Becky might spell her name Beci

CH is a separate letter.

sonicshoegazes · 25/09/2021 11:27

She would get called Mac-I as in McDonald's I think. I like it though.

Give him an ultimatum about the terrible spelling - either Macy or Maisie. Otherwise you choose a real name that makes sense 😉

This is a good point.
Maybe Masi would be a better spelling to get the best pronunciation in Wales, although it might also lead to more Masie confusion.

KirstenBlest · 25/09/2021 11:47

Masi would be Massy.

You'd need Mêsi or Meisi to get something near Macy

Synchrony · 25/09/2021 11:59

If you and your husband like it, that is what matters. Your family had their chance to name their babies. And who cares what Mumsnet thinks?!?! Everyone here seems to love Maeve. I think it's hideous. But I don't judge people who like it!

My Mum didn't like my nephews' names. They are basically made-up names and very out-there. But now, they are just their names and she doesn't think about it.

Fwiw, I assumed the pronunciation Macy.

Gubanc · 25/09/2021 12:00

I'd pronounce it Matzi, which means teddybear in my native language. Never seen a name like this.

LittleGwyneth · 26/09/2021 19:07

I'm not keen - I think Maisie is very sweet though? If you were going to do it I would go Macy or Macie.

Peach01 · 28/09/2021 00:55

Whether it's spelt Maci or Macy, I would pronounce it exactly the same. It wouldn't occur to me to say Macky. Maisie however, is the one I would pronounce differently May-Zee.

If you're set on it, go for it.

@Synchrony thank you. I actually think I needed to hear that 🙂

I don't like it

Sounds trashy and I don't like the spelling

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 28/09/2021 17:31

But I also think it doesn't matters what others think and if you plan to use it then it's best not to ask
