Maci is the only name my husband likes and we’re pretty set on it. His family love the name, but my family are not keen.

Would love to know general thoughts!

Thank you in advance.

Not everyone will agree, but I think it's nice to have a name that can be long and formal, or shortened, or said with a slightly different emphasis. I think Maci is a bit limited. It's very brief, somehow.

Maisie, you could say May, for short. Elsie could be Ells, or Elsa. Imagine Louisa: Lulu, Lou, Loosy, Weese ( my cousin's name and nicknames).

You've got a lifetime with a name: it's good to have some room for manoeuvre and to allow the owner to work it.

Ontopofthesunset · 24/09/2021 19:53

It's not a French name; it's an alternative spelling of a surname, Macy, that is sometimes used as a girl's name. I think because the spelling is unusual that it makes you question how to pronounce it. I thought it might be a boy's name from a culture I wasn't familiar with, so pronounced Maki, or Machi, or Massy. I think Macy or Macey are better spellings if you like the sound of the name.

Elisemum · 24/09/2021 19:54

If it’s pronounced Macey- then it’s nice but spelt very wrong.
If it’s pronounced Makki- then it’s horrible, think: McDonald.
In my country Maci means uterus, itd be like calling a baby Uter. But that doesn’t matter of course.
But bad name sorry OP. Tell your husband he needs to pick another name from thousands of names

OnlyFlans · 24/09/2021 20:02

I'm (half) French - Maci is not a French name. As pp said it may have its origins in an old French surname (apparently it means 'weapon' - not a nice association!) but you would never hear of a French child called Maci/ Macy.

KirstenBlest · 24/09/2021 20:03

Massey, Macy, Macky, Matchy ...???

Maisie is nice

KirstenBlest · 24/09/2021 20:12

If it was a french name it would be nearer Mass-ee in pronunciation.
It's awful.

debwong · 24/09/2021 20:18

Yes, it's awful.

Would you consider Balonz?

DramaAlpaca · 24/09/2021 20:21

It isn't an attractive name, no matter how you spell it.

FlyingScott · 24/09/2021 20:22

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Is that really the only name your husband likes? Out of millions of names? He seems very picky.
But is he picky or pici? Grin
Viviennemary · 24/09/2021 20:24

Wouldnt have a clue how to pronounce it. Isn't it usually Macey. Maisie is better. Absolutely not Maci.

PattyPan · 24/09/2021 20:25

It makes me think of Teen Mom/16 and Pregnant - Maci, with that spelling, was in the first series.

Mamainthemaking · 24/09/2021 20:25

Thank you for your responses.

Macey, Maisie, Makie?

daisyducky · 24/09/2021 20:29

I like it. I've heard of the singer & the department store but I've never met a Maci

KirstenBlest · 24/09/2021 20:29

@Mamainthemaking, how sweet of you to take this so graciously.

Suggest Maisie to your DH.

I'm sure you'll be a lovely DM.

I really like Macey, the Maci spelling is ok. Are you in Wales?

Mamainthemaking · 24/09/2021 20:41

Thank you so much @KirstenBlest, that’s so lovey of you. I really appreciate your comment.

You guessed correct @brewstew I am in Wales 🙂

KirstenBlest · 24/09/2021 20:46

I'm Welsh too.
You could have Lacey but it's a bit EastEnders

BlakeDreary · 24/09/2021 20:54

@Mamainthemaking

Oh and for everyone asking it’s a French name popular in America. It’s a girls name pronounced like the American shop ‘Macy’s’.
It's derived from Macy a french word for "weapon". The french spelling is with a y, America has changed it for an I.
Longdistance · 24/09/2021 20:56

Maci means teddy bear in Hungarian. Mackó is bear and Maci is teddy bear.

BlakeDreary · 24/09/2021 20:58

Sorry just seen other people have said the same.

Would you not consider the French pronunciation of Massey (like Ma-see) I think?

I personally don't like the name as I know the World's biggest chav called her daughter this about 15 years ago ☹️

Have you considered similar? Cassie or Casey?

MonicaGellerBing · 24/09/2021 21:04

My DD is Macy and although I love her name she is constantly being mistaken to be a Maisie and sometimes I do wish I'd called her something else. People don't listen properly. So just be cautious OP as I've now set my DD up with a lifetime of correcting people over her name

RiotAtTheRodeo · 24/09/2021 21:24

I think it's quite a pretty name, OP.

Ignore the suggestions you go for dreary Maisie instead.

brewstew · 24/09/2021 22:12

@Mamainthemaking I knew it!
The i spelling makes sense Smile
