Am I the only one who thinks this name is stupid?

So, I just met a family who named their daughter Isla-Skye. Which literally sounds like Isle of Skye when you say it out loud. Am I the only one who thinks it's so odd to give that name to a baby? Or did it just catch me off guard?

Also, they were in Florida but the Dad sounded English or Australian...

Their baby their choice in my opinion.

There may be names we don't like but each to their own x

IndecentCakes · 05/09/2021 22:32

Well, yes - I've now got the urge to burst into a rousing chorus of 'Donald, Where's Your Troosers?' but whatever Grin

Mermaidpool · 05/09/2021 22:34

Yes it does, odd choice if they have heard of the place not so much if they havent

MsTSwift · 05/09/2021 22:35

Daft.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 05/09/2021 22:38

I would definitely snigger, as I did many moons ago when a friend of the family surname White called their child Tyler and when a colleagues best friend called their child Rex Harrison.
But ultimately she'll mostly be known as Isla so I guess each to their own.

LaurieFairyCake · 05/09/2021 23:43

Yep ridiculous

Kanaloa · 06/09/2021 00:14

It’s pretty daft, especially if you’re Scottish. I would hear it as literally Isle of Skye.

DramaAlpaca · 06/09/2021 00:16

Oh dear, that's unfortunate.

OddshoesOddsocks · 06/09/2021 01:31

I know a child called Sawyer Bean

Their baby, their choice but we are perfectly entitled to think they’re stupid…

Onehotmess · 06/09/2021 01:40

I don’t get the Tyler White or Rex Harrison thing?!

Kokeshi123 · 06/09/2021 03:45

Their baby their choice in my opinion.

Well, yes, I think we all agree people can choose whatever name they like. But the whole point of this forum is to offer opinions.

Yes, it's a completely stupid sounding name. Luckily, most kids with hypenated names drop the second part by the time they're about 8, mind you.

Kanaloa · 06/09/2021 04:12

@Onehotmess

Rex Harrison is a famous actor, so maybe that it’s odd to share your name with a celebrity?

Tyler White, I’m not sure. It sounds fine to me but I might be missing something obvious!

MistandMud · 06/09/2021 04:25

T’Isle o’ Wight, perhaps?

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 06/09/2021 04:25

T' Isle o' Wight.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 06/09/2021 04:26

Snap. Grin

interest12 · 06/09/2021 04:36

I've never heard of Isle of Skye. I think the name is fine

You've never heard of the Isle of Skye?! Where are you from out of interest?
JingsMahBucket · 06/09/2021 06:15

What’s wrong with being named after the Isle of Skye? It’s supposedly beautiful isn’t it?

HeronLanyon · 06/09/2021 06:17

I’d prefer to be called Isle of Skye than say Chicago (and I love Chicago btw).
Daft.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 06/09/2021 07:01

Isla Skye is much better than Brooklyn.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/09/2021 07:13

We have a relative who made up names for his children. They've grown on is now... but I hope they have inherited their parents extrovertism as they will need it. (Especially with the family unusual surname)

If it wasn't for Skye being an actual place, it would be a very pretty combination (it is a pretty combination but with an association)

RoseAndRose · 06/09/2021 07:16

If you haven't heard of the Isle of Skye, where did you think the name came from?

MumofSpud · 06/09/2021 07:17

Had to google Tyler White (American baseball) but knew Rex Harrison.
But if met a child called Rex Harrison I would also think that they are 2 contemporary/ popular names.
If Harrison is his middle name then nobody would introduce themselves as that anyway!

MintyGreenDream · 06/09/2021 07:18

Could be worse I know a Tia Maria

Maireas · 06/09/2021 07:26
