Am I the only one who thinks this name is stupid?

So, I just met a family who named their daughter Isla-Skye. Which literally sounds like Isle of Skye when you say it out loud. Am I the only one who thinks it's so odd to give that name to a baby? Or did it just catch me off guard?

Also, they were in Florida but the Dad sounded English or Australian...

@interest12 - you've never heard of the Isle of Skye? It's beautiful, well worth a visit.

Goodbyesummertime · 06/09/2021 07:30

I think it’s quite pretty but I see I’m in a minority Blush

Lockdownbear · 06/09/2021 07:35

They obviously don't use mumsnet I remember someone getting told No to that exact combination.
It sounds ridiculous but I don't even get the logic in calling kids after Island's that the parents have no connection to.

mum2jakie · 06/09/2021 07:37

I know a Paige Turner Confused

Beamur · 06/09/2021 07:40

They're two pretty names. I think it would seem a bit odd if you were in Scotland and large parts of the UK, but as a name in the USA I doubt that the connection would be known to that many people.

LubaLuca · 06/09/2021 07:42

I think it's a daft name, but I suppose 90+% of the world will have never heard of the Isle of Skye.

I know Theresa Green (not a married name) and Cherry Treese (married name). They both quite like having a talking point name I think.

ClemFandangoCanYouHearMe · 06/09/2021 07:42

DD2 was at daycare with an Isla White but we're not in the UK so doubt it's well known over here. Made me giggle a bit though whenever I heard her full name said out loud (which it was quite a bit as there were 2 other Islas so needed clarification).

InkieNecro · 06/09/2021 07:56

Worst real life name I've heard parents bellowing at the top of their lungs is Summer Skye. Skye being the middle name. They also used her surname which is an actual noun. For every single time they called her name.

Onehotmess · 06/09/2021 08:19

😂 Rex Harrison has been dead for 30 years to I think that ones ok
T’isle of Wight has made be chuckle! Thanks for explaining!

HeronLanyon · 06/09/2021 08:23

I was once doing a tour of the nou camp when a Spanish family did similar. One of the young boys had an unbelievable long name which the mother shouted at him constantly. Like ‘Juan-carlos Frederico Cervantes-Guillermo’. Heard that shouted 20 times in an hour. In full. At speed. Bizarre. Maybe not so stealth boast if related to a player etc ?

FartleBarfle · 06/09/2021 08:24

I heard a lady shouting Skye-Linda at her child once. I don't know why it did make me chuckle.

Also I know a child called Anna-Mae and I always think her mum must love Pokémon.

Luhou · 06/09/2021 08:50

Not sure if this is the person I knew, but their child is also called Isla Skye! How old was the kid? So either it's the same person or it's more popular than you think. I like both the names as stand alone, but agree together it is a bit odd.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/09/2021 08:54

It sounds daft because it could be used in a knock knock joke.

Fluffypastelslippers · 06/09/2021 08:58

@JingsMahBucket

What’s wrong with being named after the Isle of Skye? It’s supposedly beautiful isn’t it?

Being named after would mean the child was called 'Skye'

Peanutsandchilli · 06/09/2021 09:00

I've know of a Summer Day and Ann Summers.

EmeraldRaine · 06/09/2021 09:00

What's wrong with tyler white or rex Harrison!? Hmm

Tlollj · 06/09/2021 09:01

I’ve said this before and I shall it again!
There should be somebody at the registrar’s office who can say ‘ no don’t be stupid, think of something else’ or failing that suggest to the parents they change their names and see how they like it. It’s just attention seeking.

HeronLanyon · 06/09/2021 09:06

tlollj yes - or maybe a ‘central register of names’ and you simply get the next in the list (maybe with a second choice if surname causes anything unfortunate). Could enter any sibling names to weed those out.
Pretty sure there’s a society which has done r even does this.
Bit like storm names.

Makes you think !

flapjackfairy · 06/09/2021 09:15

Funniest name i ever saw was on Say yes to the dress.
A bride was called Heather and she was marrying a Mr Feather. She planned to embrace it full on . Good for her I say ! Personally I would keep my maiden name!

Jemand · 06/09/2021 09:19

I've come across someone whose surname was Bridge who named their son using the name of a fairly well-known bridge. The bridge in question was quite local to them, too, so there was never any chance that people wouldn't make the connection.

Tlollj · 06/09/2021 09:45

I honestly think it’s hormonal sometimes.
Especially these different spellings and hyphens you hear about. Poor kid will have to explain that all his/hers life.
I like the idea of a list like storms @HeronLanyon

chipsandgin · 06/09/2021 09:54

Not as unfortunate as ‘Shiloh Pitt’, I always wondered if anyone had said to Brad & Angelina ‘erm…spoonerism issue there!?’!!

With Isla Skye you’d have to assume it was deliberate, I was at school with a ‘Theresa Green’, her parents did that on purpose apparently!

JingsMahBucket · 06/09/2021 10:29

@Lockdownbear

You and other posters on here don’t know if the parents have no connection to the Isle of Skye. The OP herself said the husband sounded English. They may have met there or gone there on their honeymoon. It could also have some other significance for them. The name “Isla” is a perfectly normal name as well. Why be jerks about it?
cheeseisnice · 06/09/2021 14:16

There's a kid at school with my daughter called Krystal-Mae. I always hear the Crystal Maze theme tune in my head when I see her.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/09/2021 14:21

So they're in America and possibly Australian but should be familiar with the Isle of Skye?
