Another "why are boys' names so hard?" list

Howtotameyourtoddler · 07/08/2021 07:17

But seriously, why are boys names so hard?

Expecting baby #2, a boy. I like classic "boring" names (William, George, Jack) and my partner likes slightly more unusual names.

Our chosen boys name in previous pregnancy was Arthur but we had a girl. I've since gone off it a bit because I'm worried its massive surge in popularity will mean it'll date badly and age him. I have a name that ages me, and it's annoying. So, here's our list. I don't really love any of them but I'm fine with that, I think a name grows to fit the child. That said, I am really fussy!

Owen
Jude
Felix
Patrick
Isaac
Louis
Arthur (still on the list)

Any more suggestions?!

I like Owen and Jude.

Felix reminds me of felix the housecat
Patrick (was my grandads name) very old fashioned Irish name, could see it making an appearance now with younger kids but it to me will always be an old mans name!

Louis is nice too, think that's become quite popular in recent years

GoAwayCat · 07/08/2021 07:37

Owen and Patrick are my favourites from your list! How do they sound with your surname?

They're all nice choices to be honest. Is Louis pronounced Loo-ey? I have some American family and they all say Lewis for Louis and my son has a Luis pronounced Loo-eess in his class.

Arthur is my least favourite, not because it's a bad name, it just feels a little overdone at the moment.

How about:

Daniel
Matthew
Oliver
Oscar
Philip
Luke

MiddleParking · 07/08/2021 07:39

I was going to suggest Luke too. Also really like Owen.

OverTheWater · 07/08/2021 07:47

I know plenty of Patrick's of all ages- 2 to 90 - it's a great name and never really been popular enough to date. It's on my list. Just don't go for pat as a nickname - that does seem to have dated!

Also on my list:
Peter
Phillip
Daniel
Simon
All classic but currently little used without being overly dated a la Gary!

cptartapp · 07/08/2021 07:54

Adam
Luke
Elias
Dominic
Zachary
Benjamin
Marcus
Edward
James

freelions · 07/08/2021 08:00

Owen and Patrick are my favourites. Both are classics but not boring and don't sound dated

Isaac would be my 3rd choice from your list

Jude is ok but very 2002

Louis is a bit dull

Felix is bit hipsterish for my liking and Arthur is just too popular right now so I agree will date

Cornettoninja · 07/08/2021 08:03

How about Elijah or Issac? Both biblical but not overly common, or at least I haven’t come across them much.

Cornettoninja · 07/08/2021 08:04

Sorry - clearly your own list was inspiration for my mind to plagiarise! 🤦‍♀️

Wowcherarestalkingme · 07/08/2021 08:05

I have an Arthur. Other names on my list were:
Edward
Charles (Charlie)
Albert
William
Daniel
Michael

Noshowwithoutpunch · 07/08/2021 08:08

Love Owen and Isaac.

Glad to see a bit of love for Patrick and Owen, these are my favourites! Jude feels like middle name territory to me. I have a terrible habit of giving children "-ie' nicknames, so Jude could conceivably become Judie. Totally different vibe Grin

I'm going to suggest Oscar and Eli for the list.

Keep 'em coming!

I think there’s so many more girls names to choose from because girls names seem to have so many variations ie:
Olive/Olivia vs Oliver
Or Emily/Emilie/amilie/Amelia - all different but a variation on similar names you don’t seem to get with boys names.
Anyway!
Love Isaac from your list, Owen is nice too.

What I would say is don't be put off the classic 'boring' names because of popularity. Our eldest ds has one of the names on your original list and there are only 2 of them in a year group (all boys) of over 200 boys. I thought when I choose it there would be a lot more so have been quite surprised how few I have come accross. I think everyone thinks the same thing so opt for something more 'unusual' that then becomes common. For example Dylan seems to be incredibly popular in my Ds year group.

Cornettoninja · 07/08/2021 10:08

I really like Toby and Rupert out of the names suggested here.

I agree not to be put off classic ‘boring’ names because they’ll likely be the most unique ones amongst the next generation. Maybe you need to consider more ‘dad’ names over ‘grandad’ names. Daniel is a great name and seems quite neglected currently (in the top 50 though).

bonfireheart · 07/08/2021 10:11

Patrick is nice until people start shortening it to Pat which is awful.
Owen - ok
Jude - lovely
Felix - no
Isaac - yes
Louis - yes
Arthur - yes
Oscar - no, sounds like a pet
Eli - yes

RedToothBrush · 07/08/2021 10:18

If you go classic, go 'unfashionable'.

Christopher, James and Jonathan are good calls as they don't smack of a particular time either like David might.

Oscar, Felix, Jude, Arthur, Isaac and Louie are all fashionable and of the time even though classic. I would be wary of them being overly popular for that reason. They aren't more 'out there' they are what everyone else is calling their kids.

RedToothBrush · 07/08/2021 10:19

Patrick is a good call. Daniels are ten a penny.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 07/08/2021 10:21

I love Jude and Patrick. I quite like Louis and Owen. I can’t abide Arthur. I know I’m very much in the minority, but I just don’t get the hype. It’s not even one of those old man type names where it’s so awful it’s spilled over into adorable eg Cedric Trevor Percy.

I like your list. I'd avoid modern sounding trendy names like Ezra or Roman if you want a name that's not going to date
