Another "why are boys' names so hard?" list

But seriously, why are boys names so hard?

Expecting baby #2, a boy. I like classic "boring" names (William, George, Jack) and my partner likes slightly more unusual names.

Our chosen boys name in previous pregnancy was Arthur but we had a girl. I've since gone off it a bit because I'm worried its massive surge in popularity will mean it'll date badly and age him. I have a name that ages me, and it's annoying. So, here's our list. I don't really love any of them but I'm fine with that, I think a name grows to fit the child. That said, I am really fussy!

Owen
Jude
Felix
Patrick
Isaac
Louis
Arthur (still on the list)

Any more suggestions?!

Conrad
Maxwell
Reginald
Jonah

Of your list i do like Patrick not keen on Owen sorry.

Howtotameyourtoddler · 07/08/2021 11:35

Some great suggestions on here, thanks everyone! I love Toby, but partner isn't too keen. And I want to love Rupert, but I knew a really drippy public schoolboy who everyone unkindly called "Woopert" and I can't shake the association.

Totally agree on going for underused classics though - I think that's why Patrick (and Owen, although to a slightly lesser extent) are coming out top for me. I'm also not a fan of Pat though, but maybe that could be avoided if we went for Paddy or Patch as a nickname?

Yes we will use Patch as our nn for Patrick if it makes it to the top of the list!

Rick /ricky/ tricky also (maybe slightly tenuous?) options too.

tigerbread20 · 07/08/2021 12:01

Love Patrick. Quite a few of the names on your list were contenders for my ds3.

Some others I liked were
Benjamin
Lawrence
Nicholas (love)

In the end we have settled on Francis but I know that’s a very marmite name!
Good luck

timetochangeagainforever · 07/08/2021 12:25

Mine is Dexter Red which I still love 17yrs later and I recently spoke to him about it and he loves it too.
Otis was our other option but the dog got that!
My baby making days are over but my friends have some lovely boys names:

Felix
Phoenix
Spike
Finn
Rafferty
Sasha
Luca
Lucas
Oscar
Sebastian
Ted
Arthur
Albert (Bertie)

Good luck with your pregnancy x

Cornettoninja · 07/08/2021 12:26

How about Jerome? (I was thinking for an opposite to drippy Grin)

mynameisbrian · 07/08/2021 12:30

I like Arthur...

Hugo
Arlo
Kit
Henry
Peter
Michael
Aidan
Harvey
James

Derrymum123 · 07/08/2021 12:31

Patrick is a beautiful name. Had it down for all mine (girls) doesn't seem to date much. Love Paddy as shortened version but not Pat.

inappropriateraspberry · 07/08/2021 12:39

@Cornettoninja

I think Jerome sounds pretty wet as well!
Cornettoninja · 07/08/2021 12:41

Really?! @inappropriateraspberry

The only one I’ve met was a massive rugby player so it must be personal experience influencing me. I have the same connotations for Ralph’s.

Mayhemmumma · 07/08/2021 12:42

Joseph and Benjamin are my favourite classics

CatMuffin · 07/08/2021 12:56

I like Louis (loo ee)
Is Jack off the table? I like that

HSX8 · 07/08/2021 13:47

Louie

freelions · 07/08/2021 13:52

@Cornettoninja I was thinking exactly the same as @inappropriateraspberry when you suggested Jerome

I've never met a Jerome but I would expect him to be a train spotter or stamp collector rather than a rugby player Grin

Cornettoninja · 07/08/2021 13:56

Maybe the one I met was overcompensating for the name then 🤣

Saying that Jerome Flynn is pretty butch but then I need to accept I’m of a certain age for him to come to mind!

35andThriving · 07/08/2021 14:27

I especially like Patrick and Louis from your list. I would also suggest Jeremy. Hope you find something you love.

35andThriving · 07/08/2021 14:31

Or David is another suggestion. Suits all ages, and Davy is cute for a little boy. Good luck choose anyway. Smile

35andThriving · 07/08/2021 14:33

Violetlavenders · 07/08/2021 14:43

BeyondMyWits · 07/08/2021 14:49

Joel, Daniel, Benjamin were our 3 choices... had girls...

TheMagicDeckchair · 07/08/2021 20:58

Boys names are so hard!

We used the ONE name we agreed on for DS. Thank god number 2 was a girl.

DS is Francis
Other names that were in the running:
Daniel
Sebastian
Benjamin
Giles
Arran
Munro

Ooh, I’ve got a Francis too!! Absolutely LOVE it.
Stef92 · 07/08/2021 21:09

We named our son James but I also liked

Harry
Joshua
Alexander
Ben/Benjamin
Daniel
David
Jack

I like Adam as well but it's a family name for us on my dads side for the males to use so it's my brothers name and it's his name to use for any sons he has.

Howtotameyourtoddler · 08/08/2021 07:46

Francis has made it onto the list! We had Frances/Frankie on our girl shortlist but for some reason I hadn't really clocked the male version. My daughter has a very marmite name so that doesn't put me off at all, and her name with Francis sound great together (not that I'm hugely concerned about sibling names "going together").

Jude is also back in contention. It hasn't been hugely popular on this thread but it's growing on me...
