Shay for a boys name?

What do we think of Shay for a boys name.

We love the sound of it and that it's not too common. Also has gaelic roots (my mums Irish) and means 'gift which is lovely

Other options would be Blake or Isaac.

His brother is Noah

Shay is an unreclaimed, uncool old man’s name, and it certainly doesn’t mean ‘gift’ — that’s one of those etymologies randomly invented by baby name websites — it’s just a common shortening for Seamus, which is the Irish form of James.

Would you consider Seamus, to be called Shay?

StickyThighs · 30/07/2021 07:46

Not a fan, Blake is nicer imo but it’s your baby and your choice!

Twinkie01 · 30/07/2021 07:54

Isaac.

Blake and Shay are common and not in a used a lot way.

CliffsofMohair · 30/07/2021 07:55

I know a baby Shay born this year. Totally suits him. Well on its way to being a reclaimed cool old man name.
Definitely doesn’t mean gift though.

Nextchapterofmybook · 30/07/2021 07:58

Sounds like a made up American name

golddustwomen · 30/07/2021 07:59

I love it !! Also love Isaac.

onelittlefrog · 30/07/2021 08:01

Shay and Blake are both awful names. Sorry but they sound chavvy/ common to me.

Isaac is nice.

TenThousandSpoons · 30/07/2021 08:01

Prefer Isaac and that goes very nicely with Noah.

Starryskiesinthesky · 30/07/2021 08:02

Can it be spelled Shea as well? I’ve known one wee Shea and quite like it! Reminds me of Che Guevara. I like Blake and Isaac too tho!

Stigofthedump40 · 30/07/2021 08:03

I like it but sounds like it is shortened from something

dementedma · 30/07/2021 08:05

One of DS' friends is Shay. He's 19 and a nice lad. It's a lot better than some of the names suggested on here and at least isnt lost in the crowd of Noah's and Teddy's.

Hill1991 · 30/07/2021 08:05

Got a cousin called shay he's now about 16 he suits his name, not a fan of isaac as it's so common.

5togo · 30/07/2021 08:06

I know a Chay.

user1493494961 · 30/07/2021 08:10

Isaac goes much better with Noah. Agree with pp, Shay and Blake are a bit downmarket.

ElevenSmiles · 30/07/2021 08:12

I love it OP, my 13 year old daughter is called Shae.

HunkyPunk · 30/07/2021 08:16

Not a fan of it, except maybe as a nn for Seamus. I would be worried that written or read in a hurry, the y might be mistaken for a g!

chergar · 30/07/2021 08:16

Not overly keen and I don't think it goes well with Noah.

October2020 · 30/07/2021 08:17

Naughty boy name.

It means gift in Hewbrew, not in Irish
Newchances · 30/07/2021 08:20

Shea is really common here in Ireland. Shea is Irish for shay. I think its lovely

LawnFever · 30/07/2021 08:21

I like it, I have a friend known as Shay but his real name is Seamus.

MaMelon · 30/07/2021 08:25

Shay is a bit rough - it’s there with Kayden, Tyler, Jayden, that sort of name.
Isaac or Noah are lovely.

trevthecat · 30/07/2021 08:28

I know a Shay, he is late teens now. Always liked the name

GiantToadstool · 30/07/2021 08:33

The one I am aware of fits with family Kayden/Jayden/Tyler names so it has that association for me.

Mumof3almost4 · 30/07/2021 08:39

I love it. It was high up on my list for my baby
