Shay for a boys name?

What do we think of Shay for a boys name.

We love the sound of it and that it's not too common. Also has gaelic roots (my mums Irish) and means 'gift which is lovely

Other options would be Blake or Isaac.

His brother is Noah

I like it. I taught a Che recently and he suited it. Named after Che Guevara, he told me. :)

My DS is Shay. I'm Irish so definitely don't have the same associations other posters have with it being a naughty boy name or down market. Some of the comments have been a bit snobby!

Isaac is a nice name but I don't like Blake as a first name.

inmyslippers · 01/08/2021 22:05

I love it

Datsandcogs · 01/08/2021 22:05

Isaac Alexander is a great name.

I don’t like Blake and the only Shay I know is a very unpleasant and naughty boy.

fantastaballs · 01/08/2021 22:09

Shay/shae...... every time I hear it I think of the traitorous whore from game of thrones. And then I hear Peter Dinklage saying " Where DO whores go? "

I’m Irish, and Shay will always conjure up Shay Healy. Not to mention ‘What’s Another Year’.

I like Shay, but Isaac goes better with Noah.

Beamur · 01/08/2021 22:25

I think Shay is nicer than Blake.

AppleKatie · 01/08/2021 22:27

Isaac Alexander is a name that can take you round the world, carry influence in the corporate world or fit in playing Xbox with your mates.

Shay without any Irish accent doesn’t do it for me.

21Bee · 01/08/2021 22:32

The only Shay I’ve ever heard of was Shay Carl who had a very popular YouTube channel called the Shaytards. He cheated on his wife but is still popular, I think people of a certain age may associate the name with the Shaytard brand.

sweetkitty · 01/08/2021 22:57

It’s getting quite popular round here I know of 3 in our little school 2 boys and a girl plus another 3, most spelled Shay but one Shea.

FadoFado · 01/08/2021 23:34

I thought Shay Healy was a lovely man. Was sad to hear he'd died.

To me Shay is just a shortening of Séamus and a nice enough name with no awful connotations. But I've warmed to it even more knowing it provokes 'naughty boy name' comments from the cat's bum crowd.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 02/08/2021 00:08

My friend just had a baby DS called Shea. She's not trashy, she's a partner in a law firm Hmm

Rizzoli123 · 02/08/2021 01:16

I like shay. There is a boy in my youngest nursery class called shay. Love it. Don't let anyone talk you out of it it's your choice and if people don't like it tough

uktrippin · 02/08/2021 01:22

"My friend just had a baby DS called Shea. She's not trashy, she's a partner in a law firm"

🤣

VienneseWhirligig · 02/08/2021 01:25

First association for me is Shay Given, the Irish footballer. I think his is short for Seamus. Its fine. Isaac is a nice name but much more popular if that bothers you. (It wouldn't put me off if I liked a name, popular names are popular for a reason: because lots of people like them!)

DeeCeeCherry · 02/08/2021 01:25

I like it

TertiusLydgate · 02/08/2021 01:32

Shay is an atrocious name.

Isaac is a million times better.

VanillaAndOrange · 09/08/2021 15:10

I quite like it but I think I prefer the spelling Shea. Shay looks like it might be short for something (maybe Shane?)

Amima · 09/08/2021 15:15

It’s not “common” in the sense of being widely used, but unfortunately it is “common” in the sense of being chavvy.

Seanchailleach · 10/08/2021 22:55

Irish name Séaghdha is not short for Séamas. It is said to mean "stately" or "hawklike".

Germolenequeen · 10/08/2021 23:02

Love the name Shay - am English living in Ireland - never heard of it being a "naughty" name - FFS some people are are seriously up themselves on here 🙄

Love the name Noah but think Isaac is a step too far 🤦‍♀️
