Is it weird to have kids’ names starting with same letter?

Pretty much exactly as the title suggests, is it weird?

Expecting DS, DD’s name begins with A, is it weird to give Ds a name that begins with an a? I thought it sounded cute at the beginning but now I’m second guessing myself if it’s too ‘Kardashian’. DH thought it weird at the beginning but now really likes a name beginning with A ( I like it too).

Our surname begins with an I so it’s not that extra but I’m second guessing myself.

What do you think? Xx

I don't think it's a huge problem at all. While I wouldn't plan two children with the same initials, if they are the names you like then I'd just go with it. For a third I would definitely try to break the pattern though.

I’m not sure if we’ll have a third, at least not for like 5 years lol. I’d love another girl but the name I really really like also starts with an A 😂😂

If you called them Andrew and Andrea... it looks weird. If you have six children with the same initials (first and middle) it looks weird.

Two siblings... you can get away with it.

DramaAlpaca · 29/07/2021 11:45

It's fine. Don't over think it.

dementedpixie · 29/07/2021 11:47

My dd and ds have the same start initial.

GiantToadstool · 29/07/2021 11:49

We avoided this, I think a lot of people avoid it to avoid having 2 S Smiths in the house. For school etc or labelling. Also post (although in this modern age less of a problem!) Debit cards will be the same (O guess you can use a middle letter )

So I personally wouldn't. But it isn't a problem if you do.

3JsMa · 29/07/2021 11:50

My 3 DS have same initials as me,although different middle names.
It's a tradition in my family that girls inheritng dad's initials/boys-mum's.

LadyCatStark · 29/07/2021 11:54

My sister and I have the same first initial and it was fine until we were older teens and couldn’t work out whose post was whose. That wouldn’t be as much of a problem with a boy and a girl though.

OverTheWater · 29/07/2021 11:55

I'm considering ds2 being PRJ with ds1 being PAJ. The names themselves are quite different so I think it'll be ok. I definitely wouldn't if we were planning a third though as then you'd have to decide . . . Full set (getting a bit extra) or odd one out (unfair?)

I did go to school with Paul and his sister Paula, that's extra.

ForkedIt · 29/07/2021 11:56

Me and my husband have the same first initial and despite having different titles still get things mixed up. I would avoid ESPECIALLY if they are the same sex. Absolute pita

HappyDaysToCome · 29/07/2021 11:57

Two ok if a bit bothersome.

Whole family? Just no.

Justlovedogs · 29/07/2021 12:01

I wouldn't get worked up over it. My DH, his sister and they're father (my FIL) all have the same first initial. Coincidentally, so do I! I'd just say make sure they have a different middle initial to differentiate.

Notaroadrunner · 29/07/2021 12:02

Clearly not weird for the Duggars (19 kids and counting) whose names all start with J Grin

I'd stick with 2 and change it for any others you might have in future.

GiantToadstool · 29/07/2021 12:05

3 with the same initial would be very weird.

WasThisSexist · 29/07/2021 12:06

There’s nothing wrong with it but you may not realise it’s going to be annoying for them - my sister was always opening my post growing up and sometimes even once open there would still be a debate as to who it belonged to! The worst was when as a teen she opened a very private medical letter of mine. Official services will still mainly use the post.

What HappyDays said.
ANutAsBigAsABoulder · 29/07/2021 12:07

Knew a couple with four kids and all six of them had the same initials - their post must have been a nightmare.

WasThisSexist · 29/07/2021 12:07

Agree less likely to be an issue for a boy and a girl (unless we are beholden to title everyone ‘they’ by then...!)

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 29/07/2021 12:08

I had a boyfriend as a teen and all of his siblings (9 of them) had the same initials for first and middle names.

Nc4post99 · 29/07/2021 12:09

So DD’s name is Aya (means miracle in arabic- difficult pregnancy, it’s pronounced eye-ya) and the name we like for DS is Aiden (I also like Asher and Dean) so the names are quite different.

If I had another girl I love the name Amelia… another A.

All the middle names will have a different letter though so it’s not too crazy

3 A names will get people assuming you're an odd/weird family though. Shouldn't matter but people do make assumptions just as they do wtih names.

Thurlow · 29/07/2021 12:10

We’ve accidentally got me and DD starting with the same initials, and DH and DS starting with the same initials. Didn’t bloody occur to us when we were choosing names.

It’s not bad for me and DD as we have different surnames, but it’s not great for DH and DS!

Plus it probably makes us look like we have some stupid rule…

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 29/07/2021 12:15

I think it can be lovely, especially if the names aren’t too similar.

The queen had Anne and then Andrew

By the way, nobody in my house ever gets post as first initial only.

Rogue1001 · 29/07/2021 12:15

Tacky as

Nc4post99 · 29/07/2021 12:20

DH and my name dont begin with an A so we’re not that extra. We just happen to like these names rather than it being a weird family rule.

Also if we had a third, I’d feel like you sort of have to continue the trend just to really commit lol.

I always get my post by my first and second initial so I’m not too worried about post just more is it unintentionally trashy. But I feel the names aren’t ‘trashy’ so perhaps that negates any trash factor?
