Is it weird to have kids’ names starting with same letter?

Pretty much exactly as the title suggests, is it weird?

Expecting DS, DD’s name begins with A, is it weird to give Ds a name that begins with an a? I thought it sounded cute at the beginning but now I’m second guessing myself if it’s too ‘Kardashian’. DH thought it weird at the beginning but now really likes a name beginning with A ( I like it too).

Our surname begins with an I so it’s not that extra but I’m second guessing myself.

What do you think? Xx

I do and its the same as mine - makes life easy - name tapes all done as X London. Any relatives who want to send cheques can just make them payable to X London and I can pay in to my account and give DC cash. Same thing with parcels - no faffing having to prove I'm collecting on behalf of at the sorting office. On the planner at home we are X1 X2 and X3.....

@WasThisSexist

There’s nothing wrong with it but you may not realise it’s going to be annoying for them - my sister was always opening my post growing up and sometimes even once open there would still be a debate as to who it belonged to! The worst was when as a teen she opened a very private medical letter of mine. Official services will still mainly use the post.
We had the same problem and I found it really annoying. My sister has the same first initial as me and when we were both at home, we ended up opening each others post so many times, including medical appointments.
champagneplanet · 29/07/2021 18:25

My DDs both have the same first letter. You can actually spell DD2s name from some of the letters of DD1s come to think of it.

Absolutely wasn't intentional, and their actual names are quite different, plus they have different middle name initials.

Don't think it's an issue at all, intentional or not.

there's a couple in the USA who have about 20 kids, all of the names start with J.
I still can't decide if I love it all hate it, but it must be a nightmare when they all get mail with initial plus surname.

I also know of a set of twins, same initials. one became a criminal and his brother had a horrible time with credit card companies, medical things etc because obv they had the same DOB, address, surname so he had to spend a lot of time clarifying & proving who he was. so I'd never do that to multiple birth siblings.

Our youngest 2 have the same first name initial; 1 girl, 1 boy.
I avoided same initials until him, but after 5 boys and a girl we ran out of names so had to compromise because I simply didn't like any other names by the time he was born (and a whole bunch I did like had been "taken" already).

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 29/07/2021 18:29

*love it OR hate it

Chilldonaldchill · 29/07/2021 18:41

I have an older teen DD. My mil recently went into a home and my DH now gets her post from banks etc (PoA). She has the same initial as my dd. It's surprising how often letters come with just one initial. So I actively have to look out for Miss or Ms X Surname and Mrs X Surname to make sure I don't hand DD mil's bank statements!

@Intherightplace

I don't think it's weird but it can be annoying. My sister and I have the same initial and sometimes we didn't know who post was for until it was open.

Theres still a mystery Valentines card from c. 1987 that we don't know who it was to or from Grin

I've the same initial as my brother - never been a problem. The kind of letters that use initials also use Mr/Ms.

Except that Valentine Card you mention, @Intherightplace but really, who writes a card without the recipient's full name Confused Probably a lucky escape.

My patents had a more sensible approach - the names in our family begin with A, then B, C, D! My dad used to tell people they were working their way through the alphabet. People used to look at him aghast. But it was just a coincidence - 3 of us got named after other family members.

CallMeRisley · 29/07/2021 18:51

The thing with the Kardashians is they’ve taken names that don’t actually start with that letter and mangled them just to make them fit their theme… Khloe and Kourtney?! However don’t forget the brother is called Rob Grin

Evenstar · 29/07/2021 18:52

I knew a family with 11 children and a 12th on the way and they all had names beginning with J

AlwaysLatte · 29/07/2021 18:53

I think it's fine! Our four are all different but that wasn't deliberate either as no 4 nearly got the same initial as no 2. I think if there are 4/5 with the same initial it definitely looks as though you've dismissed every other possible name and a bit 'try hard' as my 11 year old would say.

AlwaysLatte · 29/07/2021 18:55

NB growing up my mum had her Dad's first name and her sister had their mum's name so they were always answering for each other!

queenatom · 30/07/2021 15:18

My brother and I have names that start with the same letter and it was never an issue. Was discussing baby names with my mum recently (I'm expecting my first) and asked if she'd done that on purpose - she hadn't, the thought hadn't occurred to them until after they'd named my younger brother. We did have different middle initials and as someone else has said letters formal enough to use initials tended to use Miss/Mr as well.

KateMuff · 30/07/2021 15:38

Very common in some areas. I know quite a few families all Js, Ss and one all Ks

Cindie943811A · 30/07/2021 16:34

My 2 DSs and I all have the same initial — not planned that way but we’re names our parents liked and after 1st was named a close family member died and they wanted to use her name.
We never had any trouble at all with mail even though we didn’t always get on particularly well. We were respectful of the others’ mail because we didn’t want them opening our mail by accident on purpose. Mail either had second initial, full name or it was obvious for who it was meant.

Buttons294749 · 30/07/2021 17:30

*Is it really? I wouldn’t think much of it writing an extra letter. Miss AJ … and Mr AI …

I’m so undecided now lol. Naming kids is hard*

It's not the worst thing ever but annoying enough for me to chose different letters! If you really love 2 names with the same letter then go for it, I'm sure we all find reasons to be annoyed with the names our parents gave us lol! But it was enough for me to avoid

hartwood · 30/07/2021 17:40

With only two it really doesn't matter IMO. I wouldn't assume you matched them on purpose. If you had 5 then yes that would be obviously very matchy. Personal taste though.

MTIMSR · 30/07/2021 18:12

Not kardashian at all to me as “A” is a soft sounding letter .

CatsArePeople · 31/07/2021 07:50

My DH's family. Six siblings, all As.

GingerFox2021 · 22/09/2021 02:37

It’s a lovely idea! Why not! I would do the same without thinking too much. The names can be so different so that even if it starts with the same letter it will not sound the same.

pand6498 · 22/09/2021 02:52

That sounds fine to me.

I do know someone that name their kids Asher, Ashlea and Ashwyn

That's just weird

They’ve committed, i feel like if you have 2 with the same letter, and you have a third you have to commit lol x

Reminds me of Ballet Shoes, where the Fossils were given the same initial, because it made name tapes easier.

ilovemykids5 · 24/09/2021 13:09

A boy and a girl with same initial is fine.
I know someone with 5 boys all beginning with same initial and that is weird.
