Is it weird to have kids’ names starting with same letter?

Pretty much exactly as the title suggests, is it weird?

Expecting DS, DD’s name begins with A, is it weird to give Ds a name that begins with an a? I thought it sounded cute at the beginning but now I’m second guessing myself if it’s too ‘Kardashian’. DH thought it weird at the beginning but now really likes a name beginning with A ( I like it too).

Our surname begins with an I so it’s not that extra but I’m second guessing myself.

What do you think? Xx

Generally it is not a good idea especially if the children are the same sex or the same sex as the parent with the same initial.

Some letters will be sent out with just first initial lastname so you won't know what person in the household it is for e.g. which Mr S Smith.

Also some companies that apply to put things on people's credit records can update the wrong record.

One of my brother's shares the same first initial as his son so letters have got confused. (Though I have taken the piss when I've gotten parcels delivered to their house in the past, as I know one of them is likely to be in and so either can sign for it. )

I went to school with a girl who was one of about 7 kids all with names beginning with J

Jess, Jasmine, Joanne, Jonathan etc etc
Their mum told my mum once she only had to buy one set of name labels

J. surname

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

My niece did this, picked a boys name that happened to have the same initial as her daughters name, then unexpectedly had a third . She didn't want them to feel left out with a different letter but there really wasn't a lot of nice names beginning with that initial. She did find a name she liked but didn't have many names to choose from..

starfishmummy · 29/07/2021 12:39

They need a different middle initial which you/they need to use because of post and official things like doctors and schools.

Nc4post99 · 29/07/2021 12:41

To make matters weirder, although in another direction of weird DH has recently moved jobs and his new manager is called Dean, the only other boys name we like that doesn’t begin with an A 😂😂

Definitely will have different letter middle names for sure. DD’s begins with J and DS’s will be an I

Not weird, perfectly fine. A family at my high school had kids starting with consecutive letters of the alphabet. Went all the way up to F!

Buttons294749 · 29/07/2021 12:51

My sibs and I are all C

It was intensely annoying as a child to have 3 Miss C Bloggs and never know who letters was for! Also a bit confusing at school too.

My DC have different initials

grey12 · 29/07/2021 12:52

My school friend had 4 sisters and her dad had this family tradition:

Dad and uncle: Leonardo and Leoncio (possibly a Leopoldo as well?)

Daughters: Leone, Leonora, Leonor, Leonilda, Leonisa (I know they were 5 sisters, don't know for sure the last 2 but you get the point Wink)

Buttons294749 · 29/07/2021 12:54

And just to mention even if you give your middle initial to people whom you expect to write to you, does not mean that is the case

It's also annoying to have to write 3 x initials on shoes/toys that you would normally write just your initial.

It's not really a big deal but definitely somewhat annoying.

Flipping heck that must have been confusing lol

My MIL did this with all three of hers, and it's the same as their Dad's initial too. I think it's weird!!

Is it really? I wouldn’t think much of it writing an extra letter. Miss AJ … and Mr AI …

I’m so undecided now lol. Naming kids is hard

Naming kids is hard

Grin we take freaking forever !!!!!!

SageMist · 29/07/2021 14:09

Personally I think that more than one person having the same initials in one household is a pain. My dad and brother have the same first initials and they were forever opening each other's post.

Nc4post99 · 29/07/2021 15:29

Are we thinking it’s less potentially awkward with a boy and a girl than 2 girls/ 2 boys? That’s the vibe I’m getting so far.

What sounds nicer Aya and Aiden or Aya and Dean? I personally prefer the name Aiden to Dean and DH’s boss is called Dean so that feels weird to me

It's a non issue

I have same initial as my brother and it never caused any problems or comments

My parents couldn't be further away from Kardashian types Grin

WasThisSexist · 29/07/2021 16:33

I disagree that most post comes with both initials. I would never have noticed otherwise if I hadn’t had a childhood of my sister opening my post but it’s true - medical stuff just uses first initial, as does a lot of official govt stuff. Banks always use both 🤷‍♀️

They typically use a title though don’t they? All my medical info comes with my first and second name. Banks like you said first and second initial

No big deal for different sex siblings, actually it sounds quite nice imo. I share a initial with my brother and it rarely caused problems - most post seemed to have Mr/Miss or our full names (I wouldn't have wanted to share initials with my sister though in case it only said Miss A Surname). It also saved our parents money on name tapes! Grin

I think if you are having a third, I wouldn't continue down the "A" route though - as well as postal issues, I think it starts to get a bit Kardashian like.

Disfordarkchocolate · 29/07/2021 18:13

With two children it's fine, especially if they have different middle initials to differentiate post.

WaterIsBest · 29/07/2021 18:16

I dont think i would personally do it

Different, but, i know a woman and all of her children are ‘flowers’

Holly, Rose, Lilly, And Daisy Confused

EssentialHummus · 29/07/2021 18:18

I know a family of five where both adults and kids have the same first initial. I really think it’s fine, wouldn’t find it tacky or trashy or whatever else unless you were deliberately mis-spelling names for effect (Khloe, Kourtney…).

Intherightplace · 29/07/2021 18:20

I don't think it's weird but it can be annoying. My sister and I have the same initial and sometimes we didn't know who post was for until it was open.

Theres still a mystery Valentines card from c. 1987 that we don't know who it was to or from Grin

Frazzled2207 · 29/07/2021 18:21

Quite a few people I know did this. In wouldn’t personally but I don’t think it is an issue.
