Pronunciation of Evelyn

I have always pronounced this Ev-er-lyn but am aware that some people pronounce Eve-lyn. For those that have an Evelyn, how often do you find it is mispronounced?(however you choose to say it)

Trying to name baby DD, absolutely love this name, we would pronounce Ev-er-lyn, our surname is Head....if pronounced Eve-Lyn I’m worried it could sounds bad - am I overthinking it??

Getting stressed that DD has no name!!

If popularity bothers you avoid. At one point one third of the girls in dd1 class were named a variant of Eve. It’s the Sarah of this generation

MsTSwift · 12/04/2021 16:45

Her pals were Eve, Evie, Eve and Eva 😬. Several I think were Evelyns but they all ended up as Eves. Got terribly confusing

Horehound · 12/04/2021 16:46

Ev-er sounds sit imo. The name is Evelyn and it's pronounced Ev-eh-linn like that and goes better with head than the er way

Justmuddlingalong · 12/04/2021 16:49

I'm Scottish and pronounce it
Ev-lin. Just to confuse things more.

Me too. Ev-lin is how I would pronounce it.
Horehound · 12/04/2021 16:50

Nah there's definitely an -eh- in there. I'm Scottish too :)

Kidssendingmenuts · 12/04/2021 16:51

Ev el in is how I would say it x

FancySomeChips · 12/04/2021 16:53

Ev-lynn

From the south

Came to say this!
OppsUpsSide · 12/04/2021 16:55

I would say Ev-Lynn or Eve-Lynn, I don’t think I would say Ev-Er-Lynn but I might say Ev-uh-Lynn
Ohh what a malarkey!

Janek · 12/04/2021 16:56

I think people read it as Eve-lyn before they're told the correct pronunciation, which to me is Ev-lyn, but I know others say ev-uh-lyn. Eve-lyn is the pronunciation of the male version, I believe, like Evelyn Waugh.

UCOinanOCG · 12/04/2021 16:57

So the message is that there are many ways Evelyn might be pronounced. People may get it wrong initially but if you correct them they probably will go with your pronunciation for your child.

Whatshouldicallme · 12/04/2021 16:57

Ev-eh-linn, although said quickly it does sound a bit like Ev-linn I supposed. I've never heard it pronounced Ev-er-lyn or Eve-lyn.

SageRosemary · 12/04/2021 16:58

I have never heard it pronounced with an R sound ...... probably because there's no R in Evelyn.

It can be EV-e(h)-lin or less usually EVE-lynn

munchymoo · 12/04/2021 17:01

I guess Ev-eh-lin may be how I pronounce it - just not Eve-lin. But can I use it with my surname?

changi · 12/04/2021 17:03

As far as I can remember, I've only every heard it pronounced Eve-lyn.

Why wouldn't it go with your surname?
Mugginyouleftrightandcentre · 12/04/2021 17:09

I would say ev-lin, with maybe a very light, barely audible 'uh' in the middle.

huggzy · 12/04/2021 17:10

I know of three little girls called Evelyn and they're all Ev-eh-lyn. I know they all have to correct people who pronounce it the 'wrong' way though. I think that would annoy me.

stormelf · 12/04/2021 17:12

I would say ev-uh-lin

PhillipPhillop · 12/04/2021 17:14

I had two auntie Evelyns. Ev-lyn and Eve-lyn. Never heard of Ever-lyn.

KirstenBlest · 12/04/2021 17:19

Until I came on here I had only heard Eve-lyn and Evlin

DoTheNextRightThing · 12/04/2021 17:27

Ev-eh-lyn.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 12/04/2021 17:28

Evelyn Waugh's first wife was also called Evelyn and they both pronounced it Eve-Lyn. Apparently their friends called them Hevelyn and Shevelyn.

Horridcreature · 12/04/2021 17:32

I’ve pronounced both Eve-lin or Ev-eh-lin. I’d probably wait and hope the person says their name first.
