Pronunciation of Evelyn

I have always pronounced this Ev-er-lyn but am aware that some people pronounce Eve-lyn. For those that have an Evelyn, how often do you find it is mispronounced?(however you choose to say it)

Trying to name baby DD, absolutely love this name, we would pronounce Ev-er-lyn, our surname is Head....if pronounced Eve-Lyn I’m worried it could sounds bad - am I overthinking it??

Getting stressed that DD has no name!!

I do wish people would stop with the "don't use it, it's sooo common/popular!" So what?! There have always been and will always be popular names that have a vogue. If you don't want to use one for that reason, that's your choice, bit don't try to spoil a name someone else loves and has chosen. Presumably they know it's popular and like it anyway - zero need to point it out and tell them not to use it. OP asked for pronunciation advice not a critique of her choice.

Ev-er-lyn

Silverfly · 15/04/2021 07:12

I used to say Eve-lyn, but now most of the Evelyns I know are Ev-er-lyn so I would tend to assume that.

SelkieIntegrated · 15/04/2021 07:18

Id say eeev lin but woman next door to me is an eva-lin

Funnyfive · 15/04/2021 07:20

My DD’s name is pronounced Ev-uh-Lin but the uh is hardly noticeable so it does sound more like Ev-lin. If people pronounce it wrong she/we correct them. I think it would be fine with the surname Head.

It’s never shortened to Eve or Evie either. For those that say it’s too popular so don’t use it - who cares? And in any case, when I chose it 11 years ago it was at the very bottom of the charts and almost unheard of, now it’s really popular! Exactly the same happened with my DS - called him Noah 16 years ago - bottom of the chart, not at all popular now it’s really popular - we must be trendsetters 😂

LadyWithLapdog · 15/04/2021 07:36

How about Evelina? You can’t mispronounce that.

thethoughtfox · 15/04/2021 07:50

I have always heard Ev-eh-lyn if it is a girl and Eve-lyn for a man.

thethoughtfox · 15/04/2021 07:51

TBH, it always makes me think of Evil Lynn from He-Man.

munchymoo · 15/04/2021 20:40

Thanks guys for all your responses - much appreciated. I love the name so much and it really suits her. Just need to work out if the Evil in Head thing is a “thing” or I’m just overthinking. Considering double barrelling our surnames - unrelated reason - but that could fix this too! But if we don’t and just stick to Head - I think Evelyn is ok?? Seeing as most people don’t even hear the evil in head thing and we’d pronounce it Ev-uh-Lyn anyway...

My DD gets a mix of Ev-lyn, Ev-el-yn and Ever-lyn from people. We say Ev-el-yn. Eve-lyn made me think Evil-in, a few have called her that until they've asked/heard us say it.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 17/04/2021 07:44

I've always gone with Eve-lyn

Roszie · 17/04/2021 08:19

I'm a teacher and there's a lot of Eve/Evies. A lot.

Do you like Everly? At least it's a bit different.

StubbleTurnips · 17/04/2021 08:20

We have one, pronounce it eve-lin or call her Evie, expect short shrift off her for using the male version, or being too familiar with a nickname she hates. She’s 7.

For her it’s ever-lin or Ev-lin.

Violetlavenders · 17/04/2021 09:07

Those saying Eve-lin, is that Eevlin or Evehlin?

munchymoo · 17/04/2021 11:27

@Rozsie this does worry me I have to admit - but are the Eves/Evies actually Evelyns? As we wouldn’t shorten it - do you come across lots of Evelyns too?

I say eve as in Christmas Eve and Lyn as in the start of Lynda

So eve Lyn. No h sound

Skymum82 · 17/04/2021 14:42

I like Evelyn. I would say ev-eh-Lyn.
I have a madelyn too. Think that's why if it's a girl I may use Evelyn

Skymum82 · 17/04/2021 14:43

I don't shorten hers to maddie. If she wants to when older she can.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 17/04/2021 15:30

I have more of an RP/Posh Cheshire accent.

I say Ev-lin for a female

Eve-Lyn for a male (Evelyn Waugh)

Times have changed and some people,
in fact a lot of people, say Eve-lin for a girl now even though it’s originally incorrect and supposed to be said as I mention above. I’m youngish but a bit of a snob about things like this (sad, I know) so, unless specifically told otherwise, I tend to assume it’s pronounced the traditionally correct way rather than the more modern way. Any girl or woman I know over 15 that’s called Evelyn is an Ev-lin. The primary and younger aged girls are more likely to be Eve-lin I’ve found but usually in working class circles and it’s still Ev-lin in more middle class circles. Any man I know called Evelyn is over 90 and a definite Eve-lyn.

I’ve never heard anyone say Everlyn or make it into a 3 syllable name. It’s not very nice pronounced that way!
