Pronunciation of Evelyn

I have always pronounced this Ev-er-lyn but am aware that some people pronounce Eve-lyn. For those that have an Evelyn, how often do you find it is mispronounced?(however you choose to say it)

Trying to name baby DD, absolutely love this name, we would pronounce Ev-er-lyn, our surname is Head....if pronounced Eve-Lyn I’m worried it could sounds bad - am I overthinking it??

Getting stressed that DD has no name!!

I had a (horrid) great aunt with that name, so in my head it's Evil-lynn. Sorry Blush

Synchrony · 12/04/2021 17:36

Eve-lyn or Ev-lyn here too (South East). I can't see why any of the options wouldn't go with Head?

dizzycatdance2 · 12/04/2021 17:42

My dd is Evelyn, pronounced ev-lin, so , as far as I'm.aware , the Irish "way" (but not obs the Irish spelling).

Eve-lyn, is , to me, the "male" version.

munchymoo · 12/04/2021 17:51

Someone said to me that I couldn’t use this name as it could sound like “Evil in Head” - not if pronounced Ev-eh-lin or Ev-lin but if pronounced Eve-lyn.... I can’t work out if that’s a thing or I’m overthinking it??

Isn't one the male pronunciation and the other the female? Can't remember which is which.

Artus · 12/04/2021 18:17

I also had two great aunts called Evelyn. One pronounced EVelyn and one EVElyn. No uh sound in either.

Violetlavenders · 12/04/2021 18:33

I have always pronounced this Ev-er-lyn

But there's no R in Evelyn Confused

I'd say Ev eh lyn

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 12/04/2021 18:40

In non-rhotic accents like mine (South East) the r is not really pronounced in the middle or the end of words. Therefore er and uh make a similar sound and both are often used interchangeably to denote the uh sound.

Ejm02 · 12/04/2021 19:03

I naturally pronounce it Ev-er-lyn

Hughbert · 12/04/2021 19:11

I would say Ever Lynn, unless told differently. It is a very harsh name imo and the fact there are always threads where noone knows how on earth to pronounce it, make it a very Marmite name.

Whatshouldicallme · 12/04/2021 19:12

I don't think your last name makes a stitch of difference. I spent quite a few minutes saying both ev-eh-lyn Head and eve-lyn Head alound to sort out why you were worried and couldn't work it out until you explained it. I don't think the "evil in head" thing would occur to most people!

Mooncupdotcom · 12/04/2021 19:14

Historically pronounced Eve Lynn for boys like Evelyn Waugh. And Evv Lynn for the girls.

And yes it is the most popular girls name by a long way round here.

superram · 12/04/2021 19:15

I pronounce it like you (northern) I didn’t want it mispronounced so went with Evie. She’s 11 so before it got v popular.

GrouchyKiwi · 12/04/2021 19:19

We have an Evelyn. So far we've only had to correct pronunciation from DH's family as he had a great aunt Eve-lyn. And we only had to correct it once.

We pronounce it Ev-lyn, with a nearly imperceptible "uh" in the middle.

thatllberight · 12/04/2021 19:21

I'd say Ev-lin or Ev-eh-lin. Also Scottish. To echo what others have said, lots of variations of this around. DD's class has Evie, Eva, Ava and Aoife. On the other hand these names are popular for a reason- they're lovely.

Edenember · 12/04/2021 19:21

I would pronounce Evelyn Ev-lin, only two syllables - but Evelyne with a final e I’d pronounce Eev-lin.

fallfallfall · 12/04/2021 19:27

It’s regional covered 1000 times on MN, three syllables where I’m from ev-ah-lyn

Dietcokeaddiction · 12/04/2021 20:45

I pronounce it Ev-uh-lin.
I've heard it pronounced Eve-lin but I don't like that as much.

DungeonKeeper · 12/04/2021 20:48

Massively overused along with Eve/Evie/Eva. I swear half the girls at school are some variant of Eve. I’ve known it pronounced both ways.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 12/04/2021 20:52

DD's name but we changed the spelling so it can only really be pronounced one way when you look at it

NailsNeedDoing · 12/04/2021 21:00

Honestly OP, with your surname, I wouldn’t. I heard the evil in head thing straight away, sorry. It’s a shame, Evelyn is a lovely name, but there are other lovely names that won’t have you wondering constantly if people heard it that way but are polite enough not to say anything.

DoingItMyself · 12/04/2021 21:06

Ev-lin or Eave-lin. No uh in the middle.

EileenGC · 12/04/2021 21:13

I’d say Ev-eh-lyn too.

For those asking about the R, it’s because in some accents the r’s at the end of the word or between certain syllables, are simply not pronounced.

I say ever as ev-uh or ev-eh. Water is what-uh.
Ev-er-lyn is the same as Ev-eh-lyn for me.

East London/Essex accent.

Newmum110 · 12/04/2021 21:19

I would say Ev-eh-linn, what way do you want it pronounced? I'm sure if you tell people they will pick it up quick enough as long as it actually matches the name

Disneymum1993 · 12/04/2021 21:22

Evlin where I'm from in Scotland
