Maeve and..... Kiora?

Due end of July so plenty time to decide... but I'm soo picky with names! DD1 is called Maeve. I love it because it's spells like it sounds and has celtic/Irish origins. Also not too many syllables as surname is 3. We live in Scotland and have Irish and Italian heritage.

Recently I was all set on Ciara, but the mispronunciations -kee-ah-rah/ see-ah-rah have put me off. I think the correct way is Kee-ra

I've stumbled upon Kiara, I think it has celtic origins from a quick google? Seems to mean little dark love, which would be nice if DD2 is dark like me (DD1 very fair like her dad) would it be weird as a name if this baby is blond too? Am I overthinking this?!

Any other suggestions? Or thoughts on Kiara?

Kiara or Kiora?
Kiara to me is pronounced Kee-ara. If you want Keira then spell it Keira.
Kiora is orange squash.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 17/03/2021 10:51

Oh I see - Kiara not Kiora. Yes that’s a nice name!

I was worried you wanted name a child after the orange cordial.

Spidey66 · 17/03/2021 10:52

Sorry is that a typo in your title? Because I w9uldnt like Kiora as it sounds like a drink.

Kiara is ok, but I prefer Ciara. I think it goes well with Maeve.

BeeKeeping · 17/03/2021 10:52

Kiora! The orange squash reference is new to me...

Autocorrect seems to prefer Kiara...

Kiara I would assume would be pronounced Key-Ah-Rah. I think you'd have exactly the same pronunciation issues as you were anticipating with Ciara.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 17/03/2021 10:53

With Kiara I think you will get a lot of mispronunciations though, however you intend it to be pronounced.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 17/03/2021 10:53

Yeah, not for me or my dog.

Definitely not Kiora
dementedpixie · 17/03/2021 10:55

Kia ora is am orange squash drink and was the first thing I thought if when I saw the name

crochetlove · 17/03/2021 10:56

It's too orangey for crows

dementedpixie · 17/03/2021 10:57

Comes in blackcurrant too

Maeve and..... Kiora?
Bubbinsmakesthree · 17/03/2021 10:57

Hang on you meant Kiora? No no no no!

Same4Walls · 17/03/2021 10:58

Oh I assumed Kiora was a typo. I imagine she would get that assumption all the time and it would be corrected constantly to Kiara. Surely that's even more annoying that occasionally having to correct the pronunciation of caller Kiara/Ciara.

Badabingbadabum · 17/03/2021 10:58

Kiora is defi itely a juice. Big in th 80s.

If you are not a fan of the mispronunciations of Ciara then spell it Keira. Kiora, as wellas many people linking it with a drink, sounds like a model of car.

I’ll just leave this here!

BeeKeeping · 17/03/2021 10:59

Orange squash eh? Who knew! Okay it's off the list!

My preferred pronunciation is kee-ah-rah (which I know flies in the face of not too many syllables... but I've known nasty Keira's who have put me off) I thought that Kiora would be a nice variant without straying too close to Keira.

Would Ciara not be pronounced Kee-rah?

OP posts:
CakesOfVersailles · 17/03/2021 10:59

I think Ciara is a great name. Most people would know to pronounce it with a hard 'c' or would only need correcting once. Honestly I would stick with this one!

The K variant is usually Kiera. Sometimes Keira after Keira Knightley (who openly admits her name is a misspelling of Kiera!).

I have never heard of Kiara outside of the Lion King II Blush. I think you would get some confusion between Key-ah-rah or Keer-ah pronunciations.

But all are nicer than Kiora Wink

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 17/03/2021 10:59

I would assume Kiora was a typo or misspelling for Kiara.

I would pronounce Kiara / Ciara as Kiera.

JaquelineBeanstalk · 17/03/2021 11:00

Keira Knightly is well enough known that if this is the pronunciation you're after, I'd spell it that way.

You're not serious about Kiora!

Bubbinsmakesthree · 17/03/2021 11:00

To anyone 40+ Kiora definitely brings to mind an incredibly catchy 1980s advert for orange squash. Definitely too orangey for crows.

Well that's terrifying! Now I know! Good old mumsnet to the rescue again...

Atla · 17/03/2021 11:02

Keira or Ciara surely? I think you'll get the same pronunciation issues with Kiara and Ciara, and yup, Kia ora was orange squash!

Mayzee · 17/03/2021 11:02

Ciara and Keira are pronounced the exact same way - Kee Ra
I know someone who named their child Keyarra which will get the sound you want (but I don’t like personally)
What about Maeve and Aoife if you like the Irish names?

Atla · 17/03/2021 11:03

Haha missed the clip of kiora advert - i used to beg my mum to get it and she wouldn't because it was full of e-numbers Grin
