Aster

Considering for my baby girl. Like the idea of a floral name but really don't want the super-common Lily, Daisy, Florence etc.

Give it to me straight: are kids just going to call her Ass?

I think it might get confused for Esther.

Tuscadero · 04/02/2021 18:37

Wasn't there a fabulously wealthy American dynasty called the Astors?

I quite like Aster but I don't love it. Tansy is a nice flower name that's not too common. Might be too girlie for you.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 04/02/2021 18:37

Sounds like someone who can’t prounce their Ds saying Asda.

partyatthepalace · 04/02/2021 19:54

I like it, and no I don’t think she’ll be called ass. Go for it

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 04/02/2021 20:05

No , sorry I’d think of the ass connection too.

VinterKvinna · 04/02/2021 20:09

Asta la vista (doesnt matter how you spell it)

(especially as its Hasta la vista)

seriousandloyal · 04/02/2021 20:10

Sounds like Asda

CeibaTree · 04/02/2021 20:12

I wouldn't OP, any name with the ass sounds is not a great thing to do to your kid. If you like unusual flower names how about Calluna?

stormelf · 04/02/2021 20:13

Love it!

WhatWouldZenoDo · 04/02/2021 20:14

Terrible.cant believe so many people say it's ok🤔

Beforethetakingoftoastandtea · 04/02/2021 20:14

Was a baby’s name in neighbours recently. Its fine.

diddlediddle · 04/02/2021 20:14

I like it and plenty of kids are called Astrid and no one goes on about the As part

EssentialHummus · 04/02/2021 20:16

I know a little Asta! I quite like it and have never thought of ass or Asda. The “er” spelling seems a bit masculine to me.

Itsabloodyeuphonium · 04/02/2021 20:17

Go for it! My DDs(7) friend is called Aster and funnily enough no one ever thinks ass Hmm. I did think it was a boys name but then I learnt it was a girl and that was that! Drama over!

BessMarvin · 04/02/2021 20:21

@minniemango

I liked it for one of mine but my DH immediately said "aster mouth".
I don't get it?
minniemango · 04/02/2021 20:30

It's a porn thing apparently to do with anal sex - Aster sounds like ass to

Where are you getting this information?
Tuscadero · 04/02/2021 20:33

It's okay to say you just don't like it. you don't need to make tenuous porn reaches.

I was asked a question Confused
Tuscadero · 04/02/2021 20:37

Fair enough. I missed that.

But 'aster mouth' is surely just a convoluted turn of your husband's mind. It's like telling someone not to call their child Hugh because someone might call him Huge Anus?

I can't speak for anyone else.
Lobsterquadrille2 · 04/02/2021 20:40

It's ok - I would think of Nancy Astor though.

ButterscotchWhip · 04/02/2021 20:49

Thanks everyone. I like Zinnia a lot. Briar is lovely but feels dangerously close to Brian Grin

I like Ivy & Violet but they're everywhere now. DP said Fleur is too much like 'bleurgh'.

Asta or Astra (bit twee?) could be good. x

I like Asta/ aster. Astra is a car in my mind.

TempsPerdu · 04/02/2021 20:57

Aster/Asta was on our shortlist for DD and we were very close to choosing it. What put us off in the end was the risk of it being confused with Asda that pps have already mentioned. Still love it though, and if we ever had a second it would probably be back on the list.

Also know a little Astra - very ‘ahead of the curve’ London hipster parents. My other slightly ‘out there’ nature name is Clover, which I absolutely adore but would never get past DP.
