Aster

Considering for my baby girl. Like the idea of a floral name but really don't want the super-common Lily, Daisy, Florence etc.

Give it to me straight: are kids just going to call her Ass?

The housing association who own the social housing on our new build estate are called Aster. Definitely wouldn’t name a child that but maybe it’s just because I associate it with houses now.

Tuscadero · 04/02/2021 21:02

Astra is deffo a car. But it's also very zeitgeisty with the Astra Zeneca vaccine.

NellietheNumpty · 04/02/2021 21:06

Tansy?

gratitutesmynewgratitute · 04/02/2021 21:11

Hmmm I don't mind it but does sound make a er rather than a.

What about Calla ( as in lily) it's also a new builder but spelt Cala just saying

Primose
Marigold ( love this old lady time cute name)
Holly ( a classic !)

gratitutesmynewgratitute · 04/02/2021 21:11

Arghhhh * sound male

stellarfox · 04/02/2021 22:47

I like Aster! Iris is another nice floral that’s not too common. Or Flora or Calla

Sendingasurprise · 04/02/2021 23:06

Peony? Hebe?

joystir59 · 04/02/2021 23:09

I much prefer Dahlia

joystir59 · 04/02/2021 23:10

And I love Iris.

BaronessVonCake · 04/02/2021 23:20

Absolutely love the name Calla as suggested by a previous poster.

EvelynBeatrice · 04/02/2021 23:23

Hester? Not floral, but a similar sound. Astrid is really pretty but more common.
Dahlia’s pretty - but maybe too Bertie Wooster for you. Jonquil, Juniper, Prmrose, Briony, Marguerite (instead of Daisy!) Freesia, Pansy, Columbine, Lavender!
Heather, Honesty, Nerine , Verbena , Viola

Sheleg · 04/02/2021 23:28

I love it!

cheeseismydownfall · 04/02/2021 23:33

Aster Zeneca

LetItGoGo · 04/02/2021 23:53

I think it's ok and feels modern.

I do like Iris though.

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 05/02/2021 05:32

I know a little boy called Aster. I didn't know it was a flower. I don't know if I like it. Would she be called 'ass' as a shortening? How about Briar?

WhatWouldZenoDo · 05/02/2021 07:52

Esther or Hester much better. Hester is way harsher than Esther but it is still better than Aster

ButterscotchWhip · 05/02/2021 09:43

@Tuscadero Tansy is a good one, thank you.

@cheeseismydownfall Hahaha. Hadn't thought of that. Can't unthink it now. :)

I know too many little Astrids, unfortunately.

@TempsPerdu I like Clover too but it's a bit too trendy and like you, I have a DP who would hate it. I do think it's a lovely name for a cat or dog though (!)

@gratitutesmynewgratitute Calla is great, thank you! Would never go for Holly as I've known two, when I was younger, who were both really unpleasant girls. Primrose & Marigold I like but DP will find them too 'Downton Abbey', I reckon.

cheeseismydownfall · 05/02/2021 09:51

Oh no, sorry butterscotch! It was just the first thing that popped into my head! Hopefully it will be a distant memory by the time she starts school!

VenusClapTrap · 05/02/2021 10:05

Clover is hardly trendy. It was ranked 1017th in the rankings for 2019 according to Darkgreener. If you are discounting everything in the top thousand you are really limiting your options.

ButterscotchWhip · 05/02/2021 11:17

@VenusClapTrap Sorry, I didn’t mean popular. I shouldn’t have said ‘trendy’, what I meant was hipster, I suppose.

Astraea - an ancient Greek/Roman star-goddess?

YoniAndGuy · 05/02/2021 16:57

I want to like Aster but just don't - it's just not very attractive or interesting.

FluffyEggsontoast · 05/02/2021 17:01

How about
Clementine or Pearl
