Aster

Considering for my baby girl. Like the idea of a floral name but really don't want the super-common Lily, Daisy, Florence etc.

Give it to me straight: are kids just going to call her Ass?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
SusannahSophia · 05/02/2021 17:07

Marguerite?

Bluesername · 05/02/2021 17:12

I really like Aster.

SillyBlueHat · 05/02/2021 17:56

Aster is a social housing management company here!

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 05/02/2021 18:36

Acacia?

Hopitihop · 03/01/2022 22:42

Did you choose Aster in the end? I am considering it too...

Laureatus · 03/01/2022 22:49

Would you consider more 'herbal' than floral? Names like Briony and Rue are less obviously floral and sound stronger to me.

DockOTheBay · 03/01/2022 22:49

Aster is a housing developer around here so I wouldn't use it. I do also think the "ass" syllable is too prominent.
Esther is lovely as an alternative.

Laureatus · 03/01/2022 22:50

Ps I also know an Astra in her 30s, and she is very cool.

BodgertheJogger · 03/01/2022 22:51

I knew a girl called 'Hebe' at school and always envied it.

Twinkleylight · 03/01/2022 23:15

Alternative floral names:

Azalea
Zinnia
Heather
Rosa
Calla
Camellia
Zahra (Arabic for flower)
Olive/Olivia
Rose/Rosa/Rosemary/Rosalind/Rosalyn
Dahlia
Jasmin
Iris
Holly
Ivy
Violet
Lilah
Poppy
Cassia
Lillian/Lilliana
Willow
Marguerite - French for Margaret

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/01/2022 23:29

I like it. I know one (ver’ posh)

Aphra might also work

greenteafiend · 04/01/2022 08:00

I think the "Ass" bit makes it unusable.
How about Sorrel or Laurel if you want something plant-inspired but not too frilly?

Hopitihop · 04/01/2022 08:41

Hi all, I don't want to jump into someone else's thread but as the thread is active, can you please tell me if you would you use Aster for a boy? Full name would be Asterios and Aster would be the short name.

rmummyofone · 04/01/2022 09:00

Equally no :(
Sorry sounds nice at first but all I can think of are the horrible names

rmummyofone · 04/01/2022 09:35

Rosa
Peony
Daphne
Sage
Blossom
Fiorella
Rosemary
Juniper
Dahlia
Lilah
Acacia
Violetta
Aurora
Fleur

Marcipex · 04/01/2022 17:48

No to Aster and yes they will say Ass. Sorry but kids, you know, can be unkind.
I love Dahlia especially pronounced the US way, Azalea, Amaryllis, Calla and Zinnia.

Philandbill · 04/01/2022 22:14

I know a little Aster, I think that it is very pretty.
My suggestion is Sorrel, a university friend's name.

HerRoyalHappiness · 04/01/2022 22:18

There's an anime character called Asta who is pretty cool, but he's a boy, so I associate it as a male name.

Lalliella · 05/01/2022 00:23

Very pretty, I like it a lot.

Kanaloa · 05/01/2022 00:27

I think I’d rather be called the ‘super-common Lily, Daisy, or Florence’ than the name Aster.

I honestly don’t like it.

Kanaloa · 05/01/2022 00:29

Personally no I wouldn’t. I wouldn’t use Asterios either unless you’re planning on birthing a marvel cinematic universe villain.

I think if you’re going to use a really unusual name you should have a good think about whether you’d like to be called that yourself. Would you really want to walk into a new scouts club and introduce yourself as ‘hi, hi. You’re Calvin? And Jackson? And Tom. Oh nice to meet you all. Me? I’m Asterios.’

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 05/01/2022 00:31

I love it. A friend had a beautiful dog called Aster and it was a name on my list. But I had a boy. 🤗

Loveinacoldishclimate · 05/01/2022 00:42

I think it’s okay. I loved the suggestion Briar which is a name I’d never have thought of - it is strong without sweetness but still pretty. I’d never associate it with Brian which somehow has the opposite characteristics! Dunno!

(I do have a cat called Clover!)

urbanbuddha · 05/01/2022 03:15

The only Aster (Astor?) I've ever met was male.

Laserbird16 · 05/01/2022 03:49

I like Aster but I can see unfortunately nicknames. How about Tansy, it a member of the Aster family. Quite a pretty yellow wildflower
